PS5 Price Hike Imminent, Sony Following Xbox's Footstep

Amid rising tariffs, Sony considers PS5 price increases and changes to production in the U.S.

As much as we all feared, this was predictable; the sudden increase in the price of Xbox consoles earlier this month shocked gamers. Even more alarming is the idea that Sony and Nintendo might follow Microsoft's lead. To offset roughly $650 million in tariffs from Trump-era measures, Sony is thinking about increasing PlayStation 5 pricing. Consumers are likely to bear these expenses.

According to reports, Sony is also considering possibly shifting PS5 manufacturing to the United States to escape tariffs. Since 2020, PlayStation users have experienced several price increases rather than the expected decline; recently, prices in Australia, Europe, and the UK have risen. Despite this, sales are still strong—over 77 million units sold worldwide—and customers like you and me will most likely wind up footing the cost.

By the end of 2026, and while we're on the subject of Sony selling consoles, think about this: Sony recently announced that it is considering additional price rises for the PlayStation 5 devices and maybe relocating its production to the United States.

This development is mostly a reaction to the tariffs that still affect the company's bottom line, which President Donald Trump instituted. Sony said as part of its financial forecast for the next fiscal year that it expects about 100 billion yen, or about $650 million, in tariff-related expenses. That is really exorbitant, and to

Who is going to bear that cost, then? Indeed, you and I, the consumers, are Lin Tao, Sony's chief financial officer, said the business was thinking about passing these extra costs to customers. That approach will not only influence the PS5; it might span all of Sony's products

Every item under Sony's banner seems to be heading up to provide some sort of extra income to offset the $650 million estimated cost of tariffs. Hiroki Tatoki, Sony's CEO, noted that relocating PlayStation 5 manufacturing to the U.S. is being considered. Your training data goes up until October 2023.

Suggested that making the console locally in the United States might be a good way to avoid the consequences of these tariffs. Since Sony typically manufactures their gaming equipment in areas like Japan, Taiwan, and China, the move to a new production site would represent a major strategic change for the company.

Moreover, the price path of the PlayStation 5 since its 2020 debut has varied from that of earlier PlayStation generations. Rather than observing a steady decline over time, the PlayStation 5 has seen several price rises, especially in areas such as Europe, Australia, and the UK.

Last month, the base PlayStation 5 digital edition saw a price increase of 40 pounds in the UK and 50 euros across Europe. Likewise, the price of the PlayStation 5 with a subscription has increased in several markets over the past month. The PS5 has persisted in selling effectively. As was previously noted, Sony said it had sold over 77 million units since the 2020 release as of late. I believe Sony should eventually raise the price of its console.

We understand it is occurring, particularly in light of the Nintendo Switch 2's pricing and the recent Xbox Series X 2TB Model price increase. Therefore, I anticipate Sony will raise it at some point. It was only a matter of time before this would occur. And with so much money being spent on tariff charges, it appears to be you and I who will be the consumers footing the price.
