Publishers Stack Major Releases Ahead of GTA 6 Launch
With dozens of major games packed into the second half of the year, publishers are scrambling to avoid Rockstar’s blockbuster while creating one of the most crowded gaming schedules in recent memory.

The second half of 2026 is looking like one of the busiest times for game launches in history. Following a busy slate of announcements at Summer Game Fest, Xbox Showcase, and Nintendo Direct, publishers are beginning to lay out plans for the release of a massive slate of highly anticipated games. That's why the release calendar is so packed that even the most dedicated gamers could have trouble keeping up.
Grand Theft Auto 6 accounts for the majority of traffic. The highly anticipated Rockstar blockbuster drops in November and will likely have people spending a lot of cash. Many corporations aim to avoid launching their own titles in the same period as a result of this. Instead, corporations are waiting until the months leading up to GTA 6 to release anything. And this has created a cascade effect, loading September and October with significant releases.

That was a wise move, avoiding direct competition with one of the most anticipated games of all time, but it has now created a whole new challenge. Publishers are piling huge games on top of each other rather than spacing them out over the year. Players have a hard time choosing where to invest their time and money.
July, already tremendously full, begins the race to release new games.
This month’s first game is Rhythm Heaven Groove. Then there's Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, Backyard Baseball, and College Football 27. Each book has a distinct target audience, but the closeness of the books is a sign of how busy even the traditionally quieter months of summer have become.
Later in July, both Avatar Legends and Splatoon Raiders are released concurrently. Nintendo's new Splatoon spin-off, Splatoon Raiders, is gaining a lot of attention for its increased single-player content. Halo Campaign Evolved has completed its first month, and many fans have already bought it since launch. July seemed busy? Well, August takes it to a whole other level.
The first game of the month is Beast of Reincarnation from Game Freak and should garner a lot of attention given it’s on Game Pass. Other action RPGs look a whole lot like this one, but the fact that it can be subscribed to could help it gain a lot of players quickly.
Big Walk comes out soon after that, providing players with House's characteristic weird style. There is still a lot of enthusiasm for the project, even though some unknowns remain. One of the most anticipated games releasing this month is Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The game’s fast-paced gameplay and solid design have been appreciated by fighting game fans.
Many already believe it will become a staple of major esports championships. Games that are fun to play and thrilling to watch do well in competition settings, and Marvel Tōkon seems like it will take advantage of that. Things grow much busier around the second half of August. Madden NFL 27 and Grave Seasons are out, ahead of the intriguing end-of-month run of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and Star Wars Zero Company.

This compilation is extremely exciting for fans of Metal Gear Solid, as it finally brings Metal Gear Solid 4 to modern platforms.
This is actually the first time many players have been able to play the game since it came out on PlayStation 3. As if that wasn’t enough, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition drops the day after, giving players another significant title to consider before September. September is perhaps the most hectic month of the whole year.
The fight opens with Orbitals vs The Blood of Dawnwalker. Because of the caliber of its development team, Blood of Dawnwalker continues to draw notice. On the other hand, Orbitals has been getting attention for its retro anime-style artwork and shared gameplay. Next week, things get worse and worse. The list also includes Marvel’s Wolverine, RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Fire Emblem Fortune Weave, Trails in the Sky Second Chapter and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4.
The release date seems almost unjust, especially for RPG aficionados. Fire Emblem and Trails in the Sky are releasing alongside Marvel's Wolverine, so a lot of people will have to pick between a ton of highly anticipated titles in just a few days. From there, it gets even more bizarre.
Another busy week kicks off with Dune: Awakening. Also launching around the same time are Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teredia, Hot Wheels Infinite Rush and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. There are just so many large releases at once; several of these games might easily have dominated a whole month under normal circumstances. Instead, they are fighting for attention in the same short time.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 wraps out the month, so it was just as exciting as it started. If players thought they may get a break in October, that notion is soon shattered. The month kicks off with Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered, Rayman Legends Retold, End of Abyss, and Ace Combat 8. What’s most exciting is the reintroduction of Ace Combat, as the long-running air combat franchise still has plenty of passionate fans.
Next week we have Gears of War: E-Day and Star Wars Galactic Racer.
The second surprised a lot of people, as it seems to be more about plot material and advancement mechanisms than was initially believed. Then there’s Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, which launches on Switch 2 with major tweaks and improvements that could make fans eager to revisit Capcom’s fantasy RPG.

Later that month, Valor Mortis is released after being pushed back from its planned September release. Next up is Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, followed by the Complete Edition of Toy Story 3 and Toy Story Retro Roundup. The upcoming Toy Story movies should do well; the series is gaining popularity again.
They will appeal to old fans and those who have never seen the flicks before. For many long-time gamers, these collections offer a way to play old favorites again, while also introducing them to new players. The second half of October remains highly hectic. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Final Fantasy Resonance and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort are coming shortly.
Activision’s newest military shooter has people talking, and speculation suggests the game will have a more serious tone. It will lack the ridiculous crossover content that has become typical in recent titles. Phantom Blade Zero, another large release that was pushed back from September, comes out at the end of the month, squeezed in between a lot of other big releases, even if it was pushed back.
Publishers have avoided November for months now, although there are still opportunities for bold enterprises ready to take risks. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is available at the start of the month. It’s a nostalgia-fueled remake that’s already stirring up a lot of attention. Barbie Rewind is set to release soon after, indicating not all publishers are afraid of Rockstar.
And before anyone starts talking about Grand Theft Auto 6, it’s also coming out as a metaphor for ReFantasio’s Switch 2 version. But perhaps the most interesting question mark is Nintendo.
Several major projects still lack official release dates, including Ocarina of Time, Bloodstained: Scarlet Engagement, and The Duskbloods.
People in the business are still guessing where these games could wind up; notably, Ocarina of Time, many believe it could come out in November. Releasing anything just ahead of GTA 6 would be dangerous. It would be much more audacious for Nintendo to release on the same day, but not many believe they would.

Another noteworthy case is the Duskbloods. Some think the title could slip into 2027, but the planned network test suggests the work may be further along than some assume. If everything goes to plan, the game should be released in October or early December. Nintendo has released major games in December before, such as Xenoblade Chronicles and Super Smash Bros. titles, so a release later in the year shouldn't be ruled out.
Players have to confront the hard reality that time is the largest difficulty this busy release calendar generates, and there’s not a lot they can do about it even if they had unlimited finances. Players will face the decision of which of the many large games due out in just four months to play first, and which to hold out on. Some titles may sit unread for months or years while backlogs increase.
Sales and discounts will ultimately make many of these games simpler to purchase, but the sheer amount of new games coming out in the second half of 2026 is unprecedented. Publishers avoided Grand Theft Auto 6 going head-to-head with other titles, but the result has been one of the most competitive release windows in video game history. As November draws closer, one thing is clear: there will be a lot of games to play in 2026. The real challenge will be finding time to play them all.
