Riot Takes Discrimination Case Out Of Court

The gender discrimination case is back to private arbitration.

Riot Games has been granted by the state of California court to return their current gender discrimination lawsuit back to arbitration. Former employees had filed the class action lawsuit back in 2018 with allegations that promotions were based on gender rather than qualifications. There were further claims of sexual harassment from both colleges and supervisors. Previously, it was likely that Riot was going to settle for around $10 million. However, the Department of Employment argued that the plaintiffs should be entitled to up to $400 million instead. This move by Riot is likely to smoother that larger amount.

Riot Games has already tried to block the case from entering courts in 2019. According to management, the employment contracts allow for direct arbitration in these situations. But, employees did not yield as this would likely break up the group effort. The clause was later removed from new contracts for future employees, and Riot claims to working much closer to improve cultural equality at the company.
