With rumors swirling around FFVII Remake Part 3, this year's Summer Game Fest could change everything.

All eyes are on Summer Game Fest 2025, the event that has mostly taken the place of the standard E3 showcase as the "E3-but-not-really" season gets ready to begin. Geoff Keighley put together the event, which has quickly become the go-to destination for big game news and world premieres, and reveals that it will shake the industry. There is a lot of talk and gossip going around about whether Square Enix will finally reveal two long-awaited projects: Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 and the much-talked-about Final Fantasy IX Remake.
Square Enix hasn't said for sure that it will be at Summer Game Fest 2025, but the fact that there isn't a list of partners has left the door wide open. It's usual for publishers to reveal their plans closer to the event. If Square Enix decides not to attend Keighley's showcase, it can still do so on other platforms. Some of these events include a separate Square Enix Direct, Sony's State of Play, a possible PlayStation Showcase, or even a reveal at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 later in the year.
In the past, though, Summer Game Fest has been the best place for Square Enix to show off important news. Keighley has kept up a good working relationship with Square Enix, and big Final Fantasy announcements have happened on his stage in the past. The Summer Game Fest stage is where a teaser, trailer, or statement is most likely to be shown for the first time.
All of the choices are good, but the one that stands out the most is: next chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake triology. Part 2, called "Rebirth," came out in early 2024 and got good reviews and sales. Fans are really looking forward to the end of this big reimagining, so many people think now is a good time to get a first look at Part 3.
There is even proof from developers that backs up this idea. Motomu Toriyama, who co-directed Rebirth and is a key figure in the remake project, had said before that news about the third game in the trilogy would be shared around the anniversary of Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis. That event will take place in September 2025. By that schedule, a hint or reveal could happen at any time between now and then.
Since Rebirth was first shown with a teaser in 2022 and then with a gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest 2023, this could follow the same trend. This summer, a short movie trailer for Part 3 will be released. This will set the stage for a full reveal in 2026 and a release in 2027, similar to how Part 2 worked. This three-year plan fits with how things have been going with development since the first version came out in 2020.
If there is a preview for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 this year, it probably won't show a lot of gameplay. Instead, you can look forward to a movie-style look at what's next for Cloud and his friends. One of the biggest questions is about how the story will go in the game. There is a lot of talk about Rebirth because it takes some significant storytelling risks, such as altering the timeframe and altering the fates of characters.
There could be a hint in a taster about Cloud's mental decline, which becomes very important in the later parts of the original 1997 game. The reveal could also focus on Sephiroth's deeper history, possibly hinting at a playable young Sephiroth in a flashback scene similar to what happened in Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis. It would also be a hit to introduce Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind, two well-known figures who are set to join the party in Part 3. Sneak peeks at how they fight in games could create a lot of excitement.
Bio-engineered titans made by the planet to fight existential threats are another likely option for the introduction of strong "Weapon" enemies. These huge monsters were very important in the second half of the original game and would make great subjects for exciting teaser footage. Also, the conflict between Shinra and Wutai, which has been growing in the background, could finally move to the front of the line. Scenes of war-torn towns, intense military battles, or the rise of new bad guys could be shown to players.
Even the game's name may be shown. There isn't an official name for the series yet, but the first two books, Remake and Rebirth, are about starting over and changing. Many fans believe that the final book will be titled Return, which would signify the conclusion of the journey, the resolution of fates, and a sort of homecoming for the characters. Because past titles were all one word, "Return" seems more likely than "Returns," but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Some people said that Rebirth's marketing effort was too focused on existing fans and didn't do a good job of getting new people interested in the game. Square Enix is likely to push Part 3 much harder than Rebirth. As the final installment of a trilogy, this movie will carry significant story weight and is likely to be viewed as a pivotal turning point in the current history of the franchise.
Because the stakes are so high, Square Enix may put a lot more money into marketing, media relationships, and global trailers. The goal would be to get current and potential fans excited, as well as people who may not have watched or understood Rebirth. In order to reach a broader audience, it will be essential to have well-edited trailers that clearly convey the story arc, showcase emotional moments, and demonstrate gameplay.
Also, you should think about how Square Enix might set up the release time. Launching the game in 2027 would give it sufficient time to improve while maintaining the three-year gap. It also sets up the release to capitalize on a PlayStation 5 install base that is aging and a next-gen market that is stabilizing. Even better, it might work with the next-generation platform Sony is developing, although that hasn't been proven yet.
Aside from plans for Remake Part 3, people are also interested in the long-rumored Final Fantasy IX Remake. The project hasn't been officially announced yet, but it's generally thought to be real after it was first leaked in the notorious GeForce NOW database and later confirmed by other insiders. Journalist and known leaker Jeff Grubb said earlier that the remake was, in fact, being made with style choices that are more in line with the original game's tone and look than with FFVII Remake's action-heavy style.
If Square Enix really is planning a surprise, Summer Game Fest 2025 might be a great time to show off Final Fantasy IX Remake with a movie trailer. The game is a well-known and beloved classic, and its turn-based action makes it a suitable choice for a nostalgic revival that differs from the more modern, real-time direction of other games.
With only a few months to go until the second anniversary of Ever Crisis and the Summer Game Fest coming up, Square Enix is likely to make some kind of statement. People are very excited, whether it's a brief teaser for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, the long-awaited release of Final Fantasy IX Remake, or something completely out of the blue. This season is already very exciting, but if Square Enix shows its hand, it could steal the show.
