Steam Experiments With Chat Filters
Users can define offensive words and customize if they appear.

Valve has announced that chat filters are ready for testing within Steam Labs. The designers are mainly seeking user feedback before rolling out the feature to the wider public. The default filters come with a list common English profanity, slurs, and other foul language aggregated from the community. Users can fully customize this list by adding in new words of various languages and dialects, or removing whatever they deem acceptable. Even if a word is within a user’s filter, they are able to write, see, and send it themselves.

Currently, the filters apply to private user chat and certain games, but may be used on other Steam content in the future. Games already supporting beta versions of this feature include Dota 2 and Destiny 2. Developers have the option of integrating user chat filters directly into their games, rather than making their own proprietary ones. Valve has promised that they will never outright ban words, allowing each individual to decide what they see. Feedback will be used to only improve the tools and interface itself.
