Switch 2 March Update Fixes Backwards Compatibility Issues, Restores Final Fantasy XII Progression
The March patch addresses multiple game issues, including an annoying bug that prevents progression.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is starting to get better now that it can play games from earlier versions. Sources say that a new software update that came out in March 2026 fixed a few problems with older games. One of these problems was pretty big. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is the most talked-about fix.
An annoying problem that players were having was that the game would stop progressing at a certain point. Imagine spending hours exploring, leveling up, and getting involved in the story, only to hit a wall that you can't get past. This issue affected many players. The problem got so bad that the game was allegedly taken off the market in February.

At the time, there wasn't much information given. Players were just confused and wanted to know what went wrong. With this update, the problem seems to be fixed for good. In other words, players can now go back and finish the game.
It's not just that one title either. A Hat in Time, Botany Manor, Daddish, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, and Limbo are some of the other games that were fixed, according to the sources. Some of these problems were not very big, but players could still tell and wanted them fixed.
This change doesn't look very exciting, but it's very important.
This situation highlights a broader concern. On paper, backwards compatibility seems easy: just put in an old game, and it should work. In real life, though, Compatibility across hardware can sometimes create technical challenges. When you change the hardware or the way it works, a game that used to work properly will suddenly stop working properly.
Which brings us to the real question: how smooth should this be? The goal is pretty clear for a lot of people. Older games should work fine on a new device that supports them. There are no crashes, strange bugs, or times when the game just stops letting you play.
Some people are also interested in seeing how these games look and feel on the new system. Games like Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age were made on hardware that was a lot older than the Switch. Some players even thought the graphics weren't always the best on the Switch, especially when it was in tablet mode.
Even though the update fixes bugs in the game, it makes people wonder if there will be performance and visual changes in the future. Does this mean that these older games work, or do they work better?
Still, this change is a good sign.
It proves these issues aren't being ignored. That's exactly what early users want to see: fixes are being made, and support for the system is ongoing. Such bugs can significantly impact the experience. A bug that breaks the game just as things are getting interesting is the worst thing that can happen.
Things look like they are going in the right direction for now. Players can now return to their game libraries with more confidence and now more games are stable and big bugs have been fixed. One thing, though, stays in the air as more people play more games: Is everything fixed now, or are there still additional issues that may still surface?
