The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Cross-Platform Mod Support Delayed to 2026

CDPR promises bigger, better modding for PC and next-gen consoles.

Fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will have to wait a little longer for one of the game's most looked-forward-to updates.

The official Witcher account recently tweeted that cross-platform mod support, originally planned for later this year, is now being pushed to 2026. "We apologize for the delay and will share more details as we get closer to the release," the tweet read.

Celebrating 10 Years of The Witcher 3

Back in May, CD Projekt Red confirmed that mod support would finally be coming to PlayStation as part of this cross-platform strategy. As the game celebrates its 10th anniversary, it's wild to think that over a decade has passed since Witcher 3 first launched—10 years and four months, to be exact.

The team had initially planned to release a final patch in 2025 introducing cross-platform mod support, but we have no other option but to wait till '26.

What Cross-Platform Mod Support Means for Players

The update suggests that making and using modifications will be simpler than ever. There are already a lot of mods for PC games, but consoles haven't caught up yet. This upgrade will let PS5 and Xbox Series X|S users join the same modding community, thus fan-made content will no longer be confined to PC.

Best of all, this support won't cost anything extra for players who already own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, there's a caveat: cross-platform mod support will only be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. Last-gen consoles like the Xbox One and PS4 won't receive this feature, so that's something to keep in mind

Mod.io: The Backbone of Console Modding

The backbone of this update is Mod.io, the platform CDPR is using to enable cross-platform modding. Mod.io makes downloading and managing mods straightforward, and it requires you to create an account linked to your CDPR account.

Mod creators can upload and manage their mods directly through Mod.io, while existing services like Nexus Mods and Steam Workshop will still work for PC players. However, console users will need Mod.io to access mods, as CDPR wants to have one in-house tool for cross-platform compatibility.

Many mods will be available across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, but not every mod will make the jump from PC to consoles due to guidelines and restrictions. Mods must also comply with CDPR's fan content rules and user agreements.

Creating Mods: Redkit and Beyond

Cross-platform support doesn't only cater to Redkit mods, though that tool will give creators access to the same powerful resources CDPR used when making the game. Console mods that include scripts will need to be created with Redkit, but mods like textures and bundles can be made any way you like.

For PC users, the Witcher 3 Redkit is available, along with detailed instructions, on the official website. Mods can't be created directly on consoles, but once made, they can be shared across platforms via Mod.io's Witcher 3 mod hub. Mods created using Redkit have the best chance of being approved for PS5 and Xbox.

Although this update won't arrive this year as originally hoped, CD Projekt Red is promising a more expansive modding experience when it launches in 2026. It's worth the wait, if you ask me, because this patch will finally bring the PC and console Witcher communities together.
