Twitch Enforcing Music DMCA Takedowns
Major record labels have placed pressure on Twitch.
News by Kurtis Seid on Oct 21, 2020
Twitch has sent out e-mail notifications to their partnered content creators that all videos and archives containing copyrighted music will be deleted. The e-mail stated that users will not be able to counter claim, even if the rights holders are mistaken. In most cases, streamers were not given advanced warning to back up VOD files and content has been deleted by the automated system. Separately, Twitch reps clarified that the automatic deletion circumvents the DMCA strike violations and that effected users will not be penalized.

This content was identified and deleted for you, in accordance with its obligations under the DMCA. Going forward, Clips that are identified as having copyrighted music will be deleted without penalty to help ensure you do not receive DMCA notifications from rights holders.

By adhering to the music label’s requests, Twitch and its content creators will avoid real legal trouble in the short term. Twitch is also encouraging users to try the Soundtrack by Twitch feature, which offers copyright free music for all.
