The Batman: Arkham series stands tall as a pioneer for superhero game franchises, redefining superhero gaming with storytelling and gameplay that was way ahead of its time. Beginning in 2009 with Arkham Asylum, developer Rocksteady steadily set new heights for the superhero genre. Combining combat with stealth mechanics and a premise to die for, in a dark and visually sound Gotham City.

Its sequels—Arkham City, Arkham Origins, and Arkham Knight—built upon that foundation, which earned critical acclaim and solidified Batman's dominance in gaming. However, after Arkham Knight's release in 2015, fans were left in the dark, and Rocksteady strayed off its path toward something different. That gamble didn't pay off.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League gained widespread disappointment due to the game feeling apparently unpolished. Meant to be a live-service departure from the Arkham formula, it was deservedly a commercial failure. Leaving fans in disarray, many wondered if this marked the end of the Arkham universe. But recent developments hint at the beloved title making a long-overdue return.

A report from Bloomberg revealed that Warner Bros. may finally be returning to the single-player roots that made the Arkham series a success. The company sees value in going back to a tried and tested formula, and Rocksteady is allegedly being given one last push to redeem itself. The CEO of Warner Bros. himself has confirmed that a new Batman game is now a top priority, rekindling hope for fans who have endured a long wait.

So, what can you expect next? Rumors indicate that there are two major paths Rocksteady may take—either a remake of Arkham Asylum or a full franchise reboot. The remake would be more than a simple remaster; it would be a modern rebuild of the classic 2009 title, tailored for next-gen consoles. It's a safe bet that could garner new audiences with the Arkham formula while flexing the franchise's muscle to a new generation.

A reboot, though, offers potential for something more ambitious, a completely remodeled Arkham-inspired universe. Fans are already imagining a Gotham City bustling with life, alongside side quests, meaningful choices that have consequences in the story, and a stronger focus on Batman's detective skills. Similar to Spider-Man's New York City, but darker and more psychological, perhaps even an R-rated revision for the series may be on the cards.

The speculation doesn't stop there. Concept art has recently surfaced from a cancelled WB Montreal project called Project Sabbath, a direct sequel to Arkham Knight that would have seen an aging Bruce Wayne passing the torch to his son, Damian Wayne. Set ten years after Arkham Knight, the game showed promise and featured villains like Killer Croc and Huntress, with gameplay rumored to incorporate the Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor. It was ultimately cancelled to make room for Gotham Knights, a decision which is being criticized even now.

Another project that may excite fans is a Batman Beyond game. For years, fans have wanted a title set in Neo-Gotham—a Cyberpunk-esque future led by Terry McGinnis. Rumors suggest Rocksteady may finally put pen to paper and deliver. Flying through a futuristic Gotham skyline and battling a new rogues gallery that includes Shriek, Blight, and Inque is surely some thought. Some sources even claim Sony wants to make this hypothetical game a PlayStation exclusive for the PS6, which, in hindsight, does seem like a classic Sony move.

The one storyline fans eagerly want done right, regardless of the game's direction, is The Court of Owls. This secret society-like setting, teased for years by WB Montreal, is seen as the perfect challenge for Batman. While Gotham Knights touched on this lore, fans felt it lacked depth. A true Arkham version of the Court—with Talon assassins, twisted labyrinths, and horror sequences—could be just what the series needs.

What's next for Rocksteady and Batman is yet to unfold, but the appetite for a return to Gotham is growing with each passing day. Whether it's a faithful remake of Arkham Asylum, a sweeping reboot, or a futuristic leap into Batman Beyond, the Dark Knight may yet rise again.
