In case you missed it, Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella are no longer working for the company for their acts of “insubordination,” with Activision also claming a “breach of contract,” [possibly] because of their discussions with rival publishers. Now that the masterminds behind the franchise’s success are no longer affiliated with it, what’s in store for the future of Call of Duty?

Even with the co-founders of Infinity Ward gone, Activision said the developer will still be working on add-on map packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Also Treyarch, Activision’s secondary Call of Duty development team, is currently making the next Call of Duty game, rumored to be set in Vietnam. To top it off, the publisher announced that there will be another Call of Duty game scheduled for release sometime in 2011.

Rumors of a third CoD development studio circulated around the gaming community last month. As it turns out Sledgehammer Games, led by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey (Dead Space), will indeed develop a game in the Call of Duty franchise. The game has been described as “an action-adventure title.” Whether the Call of Duty title set for 2011 is the game that Sledgehammer Games will be working on is unclear as of this moment.

"2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise. In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players," Activision Publishing president Mike Griffith said in an announcement.
