Rumors are flying around like claws on a dog. Insomniac Games' long-awaited Wolverine project, which was initially revealed in 2021, is said to be getting set to make a big comeback. A new trailer is done, and some sources indicate it will be displayed for the first time during Sony's next State of Play event, which is slated for late September.
If it's not shown off there, sources in the business say that The Game Awards on December 12 would be the next most likely place. It's impossible to stress how important this trailer is. A short game preview has been the only way to see Wolverine in almost four years.

Since then, there has been a lot of talk about it, some of it based on the idea that it is set in the same world as Insomniac's Spider-Man games. It looks like the silence will soon end. There have been bumps in the road to Wolverine's return. Brian Horton, the inaugural creative director for the project, departed Insomniac in October 2024 to work on The Initiative's remake of Perfect Dark for Xbox.
That action shocked a lot of people, particularly because the Xbox project was already experiencing troubles and was subsequently discontinued. People were worried about Wolverine's artistic direction when Horton departed. However, Insomniac quickly put the game in the hands of experienced directors Marcus Smith and Mike Daly.
Smith and Daly both have a lot of experience with Insomniac's biggest hits, like Marvel's Spider-Man. Their presence suggests that things are stable, but changes in creative leadership during growth often indicate significant shifts have occurred. If Wolverine is really ready to be shown to the world again, it means that the new direction is now set in stone.
With its State of Play shows, Sony has created an intentional rhythm. A lot of the time is spent on smaller relationships with third parties, but each presentation is anchored by a big reveal from the first party. Astro Bot, the follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, and Kojima Productions' spy project are two recent examples. Wolverine is set to play that big part if history is any indication.
According to our sources, the reports have also said that Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon, a new Metroidvania-style game, and more updates on God of War projects will be some of the other things that will stand out at the upcoming showcase. But even among these, Wolverine is likely to get the most attention.
Industry reports indicate a 2026 release date. Sony has promised to release at least one big single-player game every fiscal year. This schedule keeps PlayStation Studios moving forward. Since Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Tsushima 2 are both set to come out in 2025, Wolverine looks like it will be the 2026 game.
This kind of timing also fits the trend of Insomniac. As seen with Spider-Man and its spin-offs, the company has been able to keep multiple big projects running at the same time. Still, it's not clear how Wolverine's release will fit in with reports of a Spider-Man expansion that focuses on Venom. Even for a company known for being efficient, putting out two Marvel games in the same year would be a lot of work.

The upcoming reveal will show off more than just gaming. It will show that things are stable after new leaders take over, that Insomniac has a long-term plan, and that Sony is confident in the game's direction. The stage is set for Wolverine to become PlayStation's next cultural landmark. The character is known for being vicious, tough, and full of raw power.
Early information was leaked during the 2023 Insomniac data breach, but those pieces may no longer show the game's path. Much could have been rethought after Horton left and new, fresh leadership took over. Now the question is how much has changed and how accurately Insomniac plans to make Wolverine's toughness come to life.
As September gets closer, people are getting more excited. Wolverine is more than just another superhero game. It's a test of how well PlayStation can keep up its narrative-driven dominance as creative hands change and standards rise. If what people say is true, the next State of Play will be the start of a new era for Marvel's most dangerous monster on console.
Right now, the only certain thing is doubt. The claws are ready. When they will strike is the question.
