The ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming is a mid-range motherboard designed for AM4 processors. AMD has maintained the platform with the introduction of new XT processors, guaranteeing compatibility and value for customers even as AM4 nears the end of its useful life.

This motherboard is still a great choice for PC builders and gamers because of its strong VRMs, elegant appearance, and contemporary connectivity features.

Design and Build Quality

The board features 14 power stages, doubled for efficiency, using 50A FETs. Being part of the ROG lineup, it comes with all the signature refinements and aesthetics you would expect.

While some marketing material may give the impression of RGB lighting on the ROG logos, it actually features a rainbow-embossed design that reflects existing lighting in your case. Combined with large heatsinks across the VRM, chipset, and M.2 slots, it maintains a sleek and premium look.

Pricing and Value

We found this board to be an excellent value for money. In some cases, it can be picked up at around $100 on the used market, with new units typically ranging between $120–$150.

For its features and build quality, it represents a very fair deal, especially for those who want to put together a mid-range or even a high-end AM4 build without overspending.

Box Contents

Inside the box, you'll find all the essentials to get started. You get M.2 screws and mountings, multiple SATA cables, safety information, technical updates, and a full user manual—something increasingly rare as many brands now only provide online documentation. A quick-start guide and a sticker sheet are also included.

Connectivity and Layout

At the top, the board includes both a 4-pin and an 8-pin EPS connector for CPU power. Large VRM heatsinks provide excellent cooling, with tactile, premium finishes. RAM support covers up to 5100mhz (OC) with G-series processors and up to 4200mhz with Ryzen 3000 and 5000 CPUs.

We especially appreciate the inclusion of diagnostic LEDs for the CPU, RAM, VGA, and boot, which makes troubleshooting much easier. The board also features a 24-pin power connector, a USB 3.0 header for the front panel, and six SATA ports.

However, if you use the lower M.2 slot, SATA ports 5 and 6 become unavailable, so you'll need to connect drives accordingly.

The AM4 socket supports up to Ryzen 9 5950X and upcoming XT processors. The primary M.2 slot supports PCIe Gen4x4 with a dedicated heatsink, while the secondary slot runs PCIe Gen3x4 via the chipset. Both M.2 slots support SATA drives if needed.

Expansion and PCIe Slots

The main PCIe x16 slot supports Gen4, making it ideal for modern GPUs. Below that are three PCIe Gen3 x1 slots and one PCIe Gen3 x16 slot (wired for x4). Be aware that populating the larger x4 slot will disable the three x1 slots, so you'll need to plan your add-on cards carefully.

RGB and Additional Headers

For RGB, you get one 12V RGB header and one 5V 3-pin ARGB header. There's also support for a Thunderbolt add-on card, multiple PWM fan headers, and an AIO pump header for liquid cooling setups.

Audio

The onboard audio solution uses SupremeFX with Nichicon capacitors. It supports AI noise reduction and DTS features via software, providing clear and immersive sound whether you're gaming or streaming.

Rear I/O

On the back panel, you'll find a BIOS flashback button with an LED indicator, 2x USB 2.0 ports (one dedicated for BIOS flashback), 2x USB 3.0 5gbps ports, 1x USB Type-A and 1x USB Type-C 10gbps port, along with 2x additional USB 3.0 5gbps ports.

Connectivity is further enhanced with an Intel 2.5 GB Ethernet port, DisplayPort 1.2, and HDMI 2.1 supporting 4K60 with integrated graphics, as well as full analog audio outputs and an optical S/PDIF output.

Performance and Usability

We tested BIOS flashback, and it worked flawlessly. Overclocking support for both CPUs and RAM is solid, thanks to the B550 chipset. The board doesn't include Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but those can be added via PCIe or USB adapters. For gaming, we recommend sticking with wired Ethernet anyway, and the included Intel 2.5 GB LAN is excellent.

One drawback is the lack of a front-panel USB Type-C header. However, expansion cards can be used if your case requires it. Software-wise, ASUS Armory Crate is serviceable, but if it lacks fan control, the fallback AI Suite 3 is notoriously bloated and best avoided.

Final Thoughts

The ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming is a solid choice for builders who want style, durability, and performance without paying premium prices.

Its VRM setup is stronger than ASUS's TUF B550 options, though not quite at the top-tier level of the Strix B550-F or B550-E. For mid-range gaming rigs or even high-end AM4 builds, it strikes a great balance.

If you're still considering AM4, this board is a safe bet and an enjoyable piece of hardware to work with.
