Destiny 2: Renegades Beginner's Guide | Gameplay Tips & Tricks

A fast, no-fluff walkthrough to start Renegades strong and farm high-tier loot quickly.

Game Guide by Faviyan Mustafiz on  Dec 10, 2025

This short, simple guide helps you clear the Renegades campaign, unlock and upgrade the exotic Praxic Blade, and use the Lawless Frontiers loop to stockpile currencies, reputation, and powerful loot. It keeps things practical. You will learn what to finish first, where to spend, and how to chain activities so each run pays you twice.

Finish The Campaign First

Complete the Renegades story before diving into side systems. Most features unlock after the final mission, including the exotic quest that awards the Praxic Blade.

When the credits end, new steps appear: one path keeps upgrading your sword, and another opens the Lawless Frontiers. Start both, but prioritize early sword steps because they feed almost every activity you will run later.

Replay “Fire And Ice” For Colors And Catalysts

Return to the Fire And Ice exotic mission to pick up the Dark Matter Crystal color you did not get on the first clear. This run also hides secrets that grant up to three catalysts for Praxic Blade.

These catalysts change how hard the sword hits and how smoothly it plays, so securing them early gives a real bump to damage, blocking, and throw uptime.

Core Upgrades And Where To Find Them

Cores bolt elemental effects onto your Praxic Blade. One core comes from a Sleeping Drag who appears in and around Tharsus Outpost. Enter the area, reload the zone if needed, talk to the NPC, and spend Credits until the core drops.

Prices trend high after exploit fixes, so budget and return later if you need to. Another core shows up in the Cantina during a weekend rotation when Queen’s Guards set up near Anor, often selling a renegades exotic, a core, and an Ascendant Shard.

The last core ties to the dungeon. If the sword is your focus weapon, set these cores as priority goals.

Dark Matter Crystals (Lightsaber Colors)

Hover a crystal to see its source. Many come from Lawless Frontiers completions on Mars, Europa, or Venus. These are end-of-activity rewards, not random world pickups. The red crystal drops from Invasions.

You can even fail the match and still see it, so go for volume over perfection. The yellow crystal lands from the new Exotic Order. Collect them all to finish your color set and fine-tune your look.

Mods For The Praxic Blade

Sword mods unlock as you level the three Syndicates. Higher rank unlocks higher tiers. Plan which syndicate to push first based on the mod line you want. If you enjoy frequent throws, chase charge-rate boosts; if you love blocking and countering, stack guard efficiency. Lean into your playstyle and the mods will amplify it.

How The Lawless Frontiers Work

After the campaign, pick up Territory Wars and pledge to a syndicate. You can align with Totality Division (Cabal), Tharsus Reformation (Vex), or the Pikers (Fallen). Each choice matters. Every syndicate sells one exclusive Renegades weapon with discounts as you rank up.

Each offers a unique Praxic Blade catalyst track. Each grants exclusive Renegades Abilities used only inside the Lawless Frontiers. You get the top ability immediately, while the second unlocks as you level that faction.

Syndicate reputation is flexible. You can level any syndicate no matter where you pledged by using the Contracts board. On the destination map, you will see one Priority Contract tied to your current pledge and three rotating normal contracts.

Priority contracts do not stack if missed and usually ask for two successful Exfills on maps controlled by the other two syndicates plus one clear in a Contested Zone. Blue arrow icons on activity nodes mark the ones that progress your priority step.

Normal contracts include one per syndicate. Each contract pays reputation to its matching faction only. If you want to max Totality Division, focus on Totality contracts and skip tasks for Pikers or Tharsus unless you can finish them together on a single route.

With smart node choices, you can clear the priority and all three normal contracts in one run for huge efficiency.

The Single Most Important Upgrade From Spider

At Tharsus Outpost, Spider sells an upgrade that increases the Tier of your activity rewards by one. Tier 3 becomes Tier 4, Tier 4 becomes Tier 5, and so on. This upgrade is a game-changer and requires you to max one syndicate.

Funnel early reputation into your chosen faction to unlock this as soon as possible. Once it is active, every activity snowballs faster.

Currencies And Smart Spending

Open the Wallet tab to track your resources. Salvage drops whenever you dismantle Renegades loot. Trade 10 Salvage at a vendor behind the bazaar in Tharsus Outpost for targeted weapon or armor rolls. Consider saving Salvage until the Spider upgrade is active so those pulls roll at the higher tier.

Credits come from Lawless Frontiers completions and from world chests. Use them to buy weapons, armor, sword parts, and Renegades Abilities upgrades.

Keep a reserve for ability ranks you use every run, then bank the rest until Spider’s upgrade is unlocked; spending after that milestone stretches your currency further.

Dark Matter Ingots arrive from contracts and end-of-activity turn-ins. Never convert Death Marks into Ingots at Spider because the rate is poor.

Take Ingots to a syndicate chest in its wing of Tharsus Outpost. Ten Ingots grant a Renegades weapon or armor drop plus +100 reputation for that syndicate. Early on, dump every Ingot into the faction you plan to max for Spider’s upgrade.

Watch the pledge flags for a Daily Switching Bonus. After completing the priority contract for one syndicate, the other two often show +50% reputation and currency.

If you are not just inches from maxing your current faction, swap to ride this buff. After you unlock Spider’s upgrade, rotate between factions often to enjoy the bonus while ranking everything evenly.

Exotic Key Cards drop in Lawless Frontiers, usually from secret chests. Each card lists a map such as Selena’s Moor on Venus. Equip Recon Drone (level 3) to reveal the insertion socket. Use the card at the two-chest location.

The side chests pay lockboxes, while the special chest consumes the card for an exotic, commonly the new Renegades exotic armor for your class. Fireteam members can spend different map cards at the same spot, so everyone profits in one stop.

Death Marks arrive from Lawless Frontiers and a starter bundle from Spider after the campaign. You need them to queue Invasions.

Before launch, you can wager up to three. Winning with higher wagers pays more. If you are farming the red crystal, aim for more attempts with smaller wagers so you do not run dry.

Lockboxes And Efficient Routes

Lockboxes bank extra payouts until Exfil. Weapon lockboxes become bonus weapons. Dark Matter lockboxes turn into more Ingots. Credit lockboxes cash out as Credits.

Keep a pace that balances speed and exploration. Clear core encounters quickly, but grab nearby jammers, glimmer extractions, and secret chests on the way because these often hold lockboxes.

Do not wander the whole map. Over-exploration cuts your loot per hour. Take Ability Chests and Ammo Chests when close, both for sustain and because invaders may refill there too.

Renegades Abilities That Overperform

Several abilities shine right away. Imperial Behemoth wipes waves and shuts down many invasions. It works even if your build is rough, so call it to stabilize fights.

Revitalize becomes an invasion powerhouse as it ranks up; the max version grants Super, letting you invade with a full Super again and again. Recon Drone turns into a utility monster at full rank, pinging invaders and revealing exotic key panels.

Strafing Run becomes a targeted boss nuke when fully leveled. Spend Credits to rank the abilities you rely on, then widen your kit once Spider’s upgrade is live.

Shiny Masterworked Renegades Weapons

Certain Renegades weapons drop already Masterworked with a special origin trait that automatically reloads and cools while firing. Treat these like “shiny” finds that extend uptime on heat-driven guns.

Check end chests, vendor purchases, and Ingot turn-ins. Keeping a few of these rolls raises your baseline power without extra crafting steps.

How To Choose Your Syndicate

Make the decision with three levers. First, the exclusive Renegades weapon. If the Pikers heavy sniper is your chase, pledge Pikers. Second, the Praxic Blade catalyst path. If you want more charge rate and throw uptime, Totality Division often aligns.

Third, the Renegades Abilities. If you want Imperial Behemoth, push Totality Division ranks early. Start with the faction whose weapon, catalyst, and ability match your goals, then rotate to catch the others using the daily bonus.

Contract Stacking For Big Gains

Scan your contracts before launch. Equip any required Renegades Ability, such as Imperium Drop Pod or Behemoth, so passive objectives tick from the first fight. Pick a node that hits your Priority Contract and overlaps with two or three normal contracts.

With careful routing, you will complete all four in a single clear, which produces the best reputation, Ingots, and Credits per minute.

Invasion Tips That Win More Often

Set your Death Mark wager based on confidence. Solo 1v1s finish fast and still pay well. If the target is the red crystal, go for more attempts rather than huge bets.

Equip Revitalize for instant Super, use Recon Drone for tracking, and call Imperial Behemoth to pressure spawns. Grab Ability Chests whenever you see them to reset cooldowns during the push.

What To Do After Unlocking Spider’s Upgrade

Once the Spider tier bump is active, spend freely. Dump Dark Matter Ingots into the next faction you are raising. Use Credits to target farm the weapons you want perfect.

Turn in Salvage for better armor splits. From this point forward, your reward tier is high enough that nearly every clear pushes a build forward, fills collections, and sets you up for endgame playlists.

Quick Fixes For Common Snags

If the Sleeping Drag core price looks wild, that is normal after an exploit fix; return with more Credits later. If Priority Contract progress stalls, make sure you are running nodes with the blue arrows.

If a map name on an Exotic Key Card looks unfamiliar, load the planet and use Recon Drone at level 3 to reveal the panel. If invasion pressure is high, counter with Imperial Behemoth and a Recon Drone ping to force safer enemy paths.

Final Power Habits

Route content so contracts finish in bundles. Exfil often to cash lockboxes. Bank currency until Spider’s upgrade, then spend hard. Lean on Imperial Behemoth while your build is young, then ramp into Strafing Run, Revitalize, and Recon Drone as Credits allow.

Watch daily pledge flags for the +50% bonus and ride it when you have time to grind. With these habits, you will finish the Praxic Blade track, level every Syndicate, and keep the high-tier drops flowing.
