Surviving the unforgiving dunes of Arrakis may be challenging for new players. This guide will help you navigate the desert and teach you to stay away from numerous threats and how to defend against the threats most effectively in Dune: Awakening.

Heat & Sunstroke

In Dune: Awakening, prolonged sun exposure can lead to Sunstroke. While sitting in the Sun, a meter in the middle of the screen will fill over time—this is the Sunstroke Meter.

After the meter is full, water loss increases exponentially. When hydration drops to zero, health deterioration will begin and continue until rehydration is complete.

Finding refuge in shadows isn't always possible, so healing in the shade before the Sunstroke Meter hits maximum is vital.

In cases of lengthy travel or prolonged outdoor activities, such as construction, you can perform these activities during nighttime hours, at least until better equipment or skills that offer protection from the Sun are unlocked.

Hydration & Water Management

Hydration control is, in turn, tied directly to heat control on Arrakis. In the first phase, survival relies heavily on consuming Dew from Dew Flower fields.

While Flowers are available everywhere on the map, they do not occur in large quantities, so you must pay close attention to them.

The second is to drain blood from defeated foes using a Blood Extractor and a Blood Sack to store it. While you can consume the blood immediately, it is best saved for last, as it temporarily lowers overall health, making it not ideal.

Blood can also be purified and converted into water by constructing a blood purifier in your base.  It enables mass production of water, which later in the game proves to be a resource for refining upper-tier materials.

Portable reservoirs such as the Literjohn can hold water in reserve. You can buy a functional design for a special Literjohn at a trade station in the first zone - Hagga Base South.

This one has a higher capacity than the default version and is unlockable from the research menu. Buying multiple of them is worth it for players intending to farm Dew Fields for water.

There is one more practical early-game item worth noting before pushing water production further, which you can make after entering the steel level of resources.

When transitioning to the second area, Familias Gap, it is possible to unlock and craft a Scythe. This item lets you harvest water from Dew Flowers and fill portable containers. However, although drinking from flowers can be done at any time, the Scythe can only be utilized under nighttime conditions, with the best dew output possible before sunrise.

Rehydrating posts can be easily located when you explore the game's Ecolab. Water facilities in most outposts and caves, particularly those from Familias Gap, are great backup options when water supplies are in short supply.

Sandstorms

Sandstorms are one of the primary environmental hazards on Arrakis. Though sandstorms on the Hagga Basin map are not as devastating as those on the Deep Desert (the game's big PVP map), they are still hazardous.

Warnings usually pop up about two minutes before a sandstorm reaches the area, except when standing very near the map border.

When you tap on the map, it opens and shows the location and direction of the sandstorm. Although the map has a fog of war, a storm icon is still present. The storm is also visible on the compass and helps with navigation.

When you are not in base, taking immediate shelter is crucial. Appropriate shelters can be enemy camps, outposts, caves, trade posts, or even rocks if they offer sufficient cover. You can view the Shelter status through the icon above the hydration meter or by pressing T or your appropriate button.

You can self-revive after being knocked out by the sandstorm, but timing is critical. Avoid reviving too early; let the revive bar time out the process since revival is done with less health and may need to be repeated.

Key factors to consider are that exposed cars are badly damaged or destroyed when hit by sandstorms, and uncovered structures are damaged. It is crucial to keep Power Generators fueled and operational since they will energize your Base Shields.

Sandworms

Sandworms are very deadly in Dune: Awakening. Crossing beyond solid ground and onto dunes catches the Sandworm's attention, which roams freely on the map. There is no Sandwalking ability, so you must focus on your stamina and carefully consider the environment.

A Worm Meter displays the level of danger and strength of vibration. As soon as it turns orange when it goes red, you must get to safety as quickly as possible.

Otherwise, the worm will kill you. Sandworm death is the only situation where you can't salvage your equipment, inventory, or vehicles.

Later in the game, you can craft a Thumper. This device can lure and repel Sandworms from the current location, making it extremely useful when harvesting large amounts of Spice in the Deep Desert PVP zone.

You cannot yet kill or ride the Sandworm in Dune: Awakening. So, avoiding them is the best chance you have for survival.

Other Hazards

You can encounter Quicksand, which will sink the vehicle and player, and radiation, which will eventually kill you.

You can encounter Drum Sand on the way to Familias Gap. Driving or walking through areas of drum sand creates drumming noises that simulate thumper vibrations, which draw the Sandworms' attention. You have to scan the map before going out for expeditions.

Poison or fire traps discovered in caves are less severe threats. You can evade them with cautionary observation or safely detonate them remotely.

Sardaukar Patrols

Although it's great to travel and loot resources during night hours to avoid the heat, there is another danger during the night - Sardaukar Patrol ships.

These ships roam around some map regions during the entire night until early morning. You can identify these patrols by their enormous searchlights and unique sounds.

When you fail to dodge or avoid these lights, you will be suspended in mid-air and unable to move for a while. A squad of Sardaukar will also fire at you and try to kill you. You can avoid these Patrol Ships if you don't want any unnecessary fights. Sardaukar-patrolled space is infrequent.

Gear & Skills

The Stealth Suit represents a significant improvement over the initial gear. It'll keep you hydrated for a couple of hours. You have to finish the journey stages and complete the first Trial of AQL to unlock the Stealth Suit.

You can scavenge outposts for equipment drops and special Schematics, complete contracts, and engage with Test Stations and larger shipwrecks. These activities will reward you with upgrades, experience, and skill points.
