In God of War: Sons of Sparta, being patient does more damage than long combos. Let your enemies attack first. Step or roll away, then hit them with a short spear string. Right after that, set your spacing back to normal. You won't lose runs to random hits as often when you stay disciplined like this.
Use the spear to control the area

The spear is the safest tool because it keeps you out of reach and can reach far. Use quick pokes to keep enemies from getting too close to you. Don't chase after a clean hit with a full combo. Take the little damage, then back up and wait for the next attack. This makes even busy rooms feel easy to handle.

Let the shield fight for you.
The shield does more than just protect. It's how you make safe openings. When you're not sure, block, and then punish the enemy when they finish a big swing. Fights start to feel slower and easier if you get your timing right every time. The goal is clear. First, defend, and then attack when the enemy is recovering.

Save Gifts for a sure value
Olympus gifts are most powerful when they help with a problem. Use them when your enemies are out of reach, when a room gets too crowded, or when you need a quick boost after dodging.
Don't cast just because you can. A good cast should either make sure that there is damage or that there is safety. If it doesn't do either, it's wasted Magic.

Don't spend money like a gambler; spend it like a builder.
Early upgrades should make mistakes less costly. Give value to anything that helps you stay alive first, and then to anything that hurts you. If you don't have enough materials like Rusty Scrap, slow down in one area and clear out all the rooms instead of running through them. Blood Orbs come naturally when you stop skipping fights and things that can be broken.
Common mistakes that mess up early runs
The biggest problem is overcommitting. Long strings feel good, but they get you in trouble. Another problem is using Magic too soon and then having nothing when the screen gets messy. Keep your combos short, remember that you can always escape, and always reset your spacing after a punish.
