Starting your journey in Monster Hunter Stories 3 can feel like a lot because the game gives you many tutorials very quickly. The following strategies will help you navigate the early acts and prepare for tougher challenges.

Combat Awareness and Elemental Strategy

When you face a difficult enemy, do not guess their strengths. You can open the status page during a fight by pressing RT or R2. This screen shows you the enemy level, which is helpful if you accidentally run into a high-level monster like an Astalos.

More importantly, it lists Ailment Resistance and Element Resistance. Using this page helps you pick the right monster from your party to counter the threat.

The game has several element types: Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice, Dragon, and Non-Element. While the game does not give you a chart immediately, you learn weaknesses by attacking. Fire works well against ice, ice is great against thunder, and thunder beats water.

Always check your own gear too. If a monster is killing you in one hit, it might be an element mismatch in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection.

Lumu Armor might have high defense, but a big weakness to fire. If you are fighting a fire monster, you are better off wearing weaker Ranger Armor that does not have that fire penalty.

Exploration and Egg Hunting

In the Azuria region and beyond, you should keep an eye on your map for caves called Dens. Standard caves are common, but you want to look for Rare Dens, which are gold. Even better are Super Rare Dens, which usually show up in hard-to-reach spots.

If you want to refresh the map to look for them, you can teleport between regions to make new caves appear.

Inside a nest, you usually only get a few chances to grab an egg before they run out. However, you might find a Double Nest event. This gives you two egg slots and almost infinite chances to pick up eggs.

This is the best time to keep searching until you find the exact egg you want. Keep an eye out for hidden paths like caves you can only reach by swimming or waterfalls you can walk through. If your hunter suggests returning at night, an Invasive Monster will appear there.

Gear Optimization and Survival

You can customize your gear using Decorations bought from merchants. Check your equipment screen to see how many slots your weapons and armor have.

You can slot in boosts like Non-Element Defense in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, which helps since many enemy attacks are non-elemental.

One of the best skills to look for is Anti-One-Hit KO. This gives you a chance to survive a fatal blow with one health point left. Stacking this skill allows you to fight monsters that are much stronger than you without dying instantly.

The Hunting Horn is one of the best weapons for the early game because its area-of-effect buffs can change a difficult fight into an easy one. An early weapon like the Magia Charm can give your whole team defense boosts, health regeneration, or even recover a lost heart.

You can also use items like Demondrug and Armorskin. These provide percentage-based mitigation and damage, which can be the difference between getting knocked out or surviving an attack.

Advanced Growth and Habitat Systems

You can use the Rite of Channeling after beating three Feral monsters in Chapter 1 to finish the main story. You can put the best Genes from one monster into another with this.

In Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, the monster you take the gene from is not deleted. You can keep your favorite Monsties and just keep making them stronger with new skills.

You can also use the Habitat Restore system. By releasing five eggs of the same monster into a specific zone, you get that habitat to S-Rank. At this rank, you can find Platinum versions of monsters in the wild, which have much better Genes and higher-level eggs.

Finally, Feral monsters are worth taking down because they set up a camp and give a huge amount of experience points. Since you can only get this big experience boost once per Feral, you might want to wait until you have a new, low-level monster in your party to finish the fight.
