It turns out that PlayStation may have had some specs leaked for a handheld device that many are dubbing the PS6 handheld. The information that has come to light suggests that the console is portable and can play games on its own. When docked, it may even be able to outperform systems from the current generation.

If this is accurate, it would be a big step forward for handheld gaming because it would bring together mobility, high-end performance, and console-level functionality into one device.

Early reports suggest that Sony is positioning this handheld as a major contender in the gaming market, aiming to challenge rivals by offering both flexibility and power in a way no portable system has fully achieved before.

Early Reports and Development Insights

Sony is currently working on creating a new portable device that can play PlayStation 5 games natively. According to reports, this portable will offer native gameplay, in contrast to PlayStation Portal, which broadcasts games.

According to sources, the product is intended to increase Sony's market share and put it in direct competition with Nintendo in the portable gaming space.

Codenamed Project Canis

With a possible launch window in late 2027, the handheld is currently known as Project Canis. According to reports, it has a touchscreen, twin microphones, haptic feedback, a microSD and M.2 SSD slot, and support for PS4 and PS5 games. According to reports, a USB-C port will enhance adaptability by allowing connections to a TV or monitor.

It is anticipated that performance will surpass that of Xbox Ally X handheld, raising the standard for handheld gadgets.

Docking and Performance Capabilities

One of the most exciting details is its ability to dock. Much like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, docking could unlock additional power, with reports suggesting performance that exceeds that of a base PlayStation 5.

By 2027, components are expected to become cheaper, allowing Sony to incorporate more powerful features into a compact design. Reports suggest that docked mode could achieve 1.3 to 2.6 times the ray tracing performance of the base PS5.

Pricing Expectations

Reports indicate Sony may target a price point of $399 to $499. If correct, this could undercut the rumored prices of Xbox's ROG Ally X handhelds, which are expected to range from $699 to $899. Keeping PS6 handheld within the $399-$499 range would give Sony a major competitive edge in the handheld market.

Technical Specifications

Leaks suggest the handheld will be powered by the Canis APU, built on a TSMC 3nm node with a 135mm² monolithic die. Key features include a 6-core Zen C CPU with 4MB L3 cache, 16CU RDNA GPU, LPDDR5X memory controller with up to 48GB support, and Likely configurations of 16GB to 24GB RAM.

Rasterization performance is estimated to be 0.55 to 0.75 times that of the PS5 in handheld mode, but docked performance is expected to surpass PS5 entirely.

Expanding the Handheld Market

We've seen a growing interest in handheld gaming across the industry. Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, and ROG Ally have paved the way, and now Sony appears ready to make a big return. If Sony delivers a handheld that you can take anywhere and then dock to achieve

PlayStation 5-level or better performance would be a huge win for gamers who value both portability and power.

Final Thoughts

The increasing level of competitiveness in the handheld sector excites us. Players will soon have more options than ever before, as Sony, Nintendo, and Xbox are all developing portable platforms.

PlayStation 6 handheld could revolutionize portable gaming in the upcoming years if Sony can offer the portability of a handheld device with the docked power of a console at a competitive price.
