Sunday Films Vol.1 : Crimson Tide
Movies by ILIAS on Jul 12, 2009
Hi everyone :) I'd like to introduce you to a new feature in my blogs, which for the needs of the moment let's call it "Sunday Films". I will post a blog every Sunday about a film that I've watched, liked and recommend it to you. We will start this new feature with Crimson Tide.
Crimson Tide was released back in 1995, starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman as Commander Ron Hunter and Captain Frank Ramsey respectively.
Situation in Russia has gonne nasty and units of the Russian army loyal to ultranationalist leader Vladimir Radchenko take control of a nuclear missile installation, threatening with nuclear war anyone who attempts to attack them. However, U.S.A. are determined and send their best strategic nuclear submarine, the USS Alabama to patrol the area and launch against Radchenko if needs be.
Ramsey (Hackman), one of the few commanders left in US Navy with real experience in combat, is the commading officer of USS Alabama. Ramsey decides to get Hunter (Washington), a man with great education in military tactics and history but no real experience in battle whatsoever, as his new executive officer. Two different personalities in a nuclear submarine ? It won't take long for tension to arise between these two great men...
The film is based on a small but true and very important detail. At the time, if US submarine commanders could not communicate with the President, they were authorized to launch missiles, as long as they have received that order. But what happens when communications are off and an incomplete message has been received ?
The original soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer who won a Grammy Award in 1996. Zimmer himself has stated that music from this movie, is one of his favourites, mine as well I may add.
Enjoy the film :)
