Nintendo Switch One in 2026: Is It Still Worth Buying Over Switch 2?

You should still buy the first Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch 2 came out in June 2025 and has already sold more than 10 million units. However, there are still many reasons why the original system is a good choice. The new console has had a strong start, but it still lacks many exclusive games, which puts the first-generation Switch in a surprisingly strong position.

There are some great Switch 2 games out, like Mario Kart Worlds and Donkey Kong Bonanza, but many people are still waiting for the newest Pokémon game and Metroid Prime 4 to come out for the original hardware. This kind of ongoing support makes one of the biggest collections of console games even better. Because of this, the original Switch still has a huge library of games that can often be played for a lot less money.

Switch 2 Versus Switch 1: Who Should Upgrade?

You probably don't already own a Switch, which is what this is based on. Switch 2 is the best upgrade if you already have one, but you don't have to buy it right away. You should be fine with your current Switch for at least another year or two unless you really want to play the few new exclusives or are annoyed by inconsistent frame rates, performance that is getting worse, or battery life that is getting shorter.

Right now, Switch 2 doesn't have a big enough library of exclusive games to make most people want to upgrade right away. This is part of a larger trend in the game industry, as outdated systems continue to receive support even after newer ones are released.

Differences in hardware and improvements

On paper, Switch 2 features better visuals, more powerful hardware, and a longer lifespan. But the changes in the real world might not be as big as you would expect from a console that came out almost eight years after the first one. The battery life doesn't get much better, and in some cases, it might even get a little worse.

The system has a bigger screen, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, and charging ports on both the top and bottom. These are all improvements that make life better. These changes are good, but they don't change the experience significantly. For many people, the switch from Switch 1 to Switch 2 doesn't seem like a big deal; it's a small step.

Choosing the Best Switch 1 Model

The Switch OLED is the best option if you want to buy a Switch 1 today. The display is bigger and brighter, with true blacks that can look better than the larger, faster LCD on Switch 2 in some cases. Quality of Display and Game Optimization

There are many Switch 1 games that haven't been updated for Switch 2. This is why games like Hollow Knight might look worse on the new console: the resolution scaling isn't working properly. They look fuzzy compared to how they look on the OLED Switch 1.

Switch 2 may perform better because it has more power, but the visual benefits are limited unless developers update their games to make use of the new hardware. There have been no improvements to games like Persona5 Royal, which could easily run at 1080p60 in handheld mode. For this reason, they may look better on the original Switch than on Switch 2.

There are only a few games that have gotten Switch 2 improvements. You have to pay more for the better versions of some games, like Tears of the Kingdom and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This method seems like double-dipping, especially when you think about how other platforms often give you free hardware upgrades.

Pricing, Value, and Physical Games

Switch 2 costs about $450, which isn't cheap, especially when you add in games and accessories. The situation is even worse now that Game Key cartridges are out. These cartridges don't contain the whole game; they only let you download it. It's risky to buy physical Switch 2 games unless you're sure that the whole game is on the cartridge.

The Switch 1 doesn't have this problem, which makes buying physical games much more appealing. Discounts are rare for physical Switch games, and prices don't drop much over time, so they tend to keep their value well. You can also play these games on Switch 2 later if you decide to upgrade.

Buying New Versus Used

It's not very appealing to buy a brand-new Switch 1 at full price in 2026. The OLED model still sells for about $400, which is only $50 less than the Switch 2. At that point, it makes more sense to pay a little more for the newer hardware.

But the market for used goods tells a very different story. You can often find original Switch consoles in good condition for less than $200 on eBay and other local marketplaces. These listings are even more valuable because they often come with games or accessories.

If you're thinking about getting a regular Switch, you should know what makes the V1 and V2 models different. The V1 version from 2017 has a shorter battery life but can be homebrewed. The latter V2 model has a longer battery life and better system security. Most buyers in 2026 will still choose the OLED model because it has newer hardware and a better display.

Risks of Buying Secondhand

There are risks involved with buying used hardware. Battery life may be shorter, fans may get loud under load, and Joy-Con drift remains a common problem. Nintendo can fix Joy-Cons for free right now, even if they are out of warranty, but the process can still be a pain.

Even consoles that are used a lot on launch day can still work well, hold a charge for a few hours, and be perfectly fine for casual and younger players. For a system that's almost 9years old, that's a long time.

Long-Term Outlook

You shouldn't expect the original Switch to last another five years as your main gaming system. Instead, it works best as a temporary fix that lets you play a huge, still-growing library of games for much less money.

Over time, new releases for the system will slow down, but for now, the Switch 1 is still in great shape. It is a big plus that you can save up to $300 compared to Switch 2. The original Switch, especially the OLED model, is still a good choice if you want to start playing right away and are focused on value.

If you want to get the most out of the entire Switch library over the long term, Switch 2 will be the better investment in the end. Older games usually run better on newer hardware, even if they don't receive many updates. But right now, it's hard to recommend buying it because there aren't any great exclusives.

If you don't already own a Switch, the first-generation system is definitely worth it. If you already have one, you don't need to upgrade right away unless a new game really makes you want to. The original Nintendo Switch still has a lot to offer until then.
