The Hacking Spree Continues

News by BrunoBRS on  Jun 15, 2011

If you haven't been following videogame news for the past couple months, you might not know, but it's been one hell of a month for the videogames industry, and i don't mean it in the good sense. It all started in April, when Playstation Network was taken down by a hacker group. The crisis lasted a whole month, and it wasn't until recently that the servers were back up, with Sony sending apology gifts to everyone.

But that was just the beginning: another hacker group, entitled Lulzsec (I'm not kidding), began a hacking spree, shutting down servers left and right just for the heck of it. Today, on what they called "TitanticTakeoverTuesday", Lulzsec attacked online magazine The Escapist, indie phenomenon MineCraft and MMORPG EVE Online. It also claims to have attacked the servers of League of Legends, though Riot Games has yet to say anything on the matter. All servers have since been brought back online and are working normally.

This is their logo/mascot. Figured out where they come from already?

Now if you ask me, it seems quite obvious to me that these are just kids with a knack for computers, but got as much parenting as a bastard monkey. You can see from their attitude, their lack of sense of consequence, their attack patterns, and their freaking mascot that these aren't adults fighting for a cause, or even trying to steal money. They call themselves "a team of entertainment and security experts that specialise (sic) in the production of malicious comedic cybermaterials" (taken from their site, which will remain unlinked for safety reasons, just in case), which shows that they treat the whole thing as a game, as a joke. They have no idea of the impact their attacks have on others' lives, and it just makes this whole situation more infuriating.

Stay tuned for more updates as they happen. Hopefully this will be the last time.
