If you've been waiting for The Wolf Among Us Remastered, you've probably already decided whether to buy it. For fans of Telltale's adventure, the remaster offers a chance to revisit one of the studio's most memorable games and see how its visuals and technical performance have improved. However, one issue could complicate the purchase, especially if you prefer physical games.

One of the biggest reasons to get the remaster is to see what has changed. The original game has a distinctive visual style that remains central to its identity, and updating it isn't always as simple as adding more detail. A remaster might make a game look sharper, but that doesn't automatically mean the experience will be better. Sometimes, these changes can take away from the atmosphere and personality that made the original special.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered Physical Disc Release

Fortunately, the footage shown so far suggests that The Wolf Among Us Remastered is heading in a promising direction. The updated version appears to add more detail and definition to the characters while retaining the original art style.

Their features look more refined, and the existing color palette seems to have received additional attention.

The game has aged remarkably well, so preserving its visual identity is important. More detail doesn't always mean better visuals, but the changes shown so far appear to complement the original presentation rather than replace it. If the developers can maintain that balance, the remaster could make an already great-looking game even better.

This is also worth considering as we look ahead to The Wolf Among Us 2. The sequel will need to build on the original's identity while meeting modern expectations, and art direction will be a key part of that process. The first game still looks good years after its release, so there's a strong foundation to build on. Hopefully, the remaster demonstrates how the series can move forward without losing what made it distinctive.

Beyond the visual improvements, the additional behind-the-scenes material and commentary are another reason to look forward to the remaster. Reportedly, a couple of hours of footage explores the game's development, giving returning players something new to experience beyond the updated graphics.

Extra material like this is always welcome, especially if you're interested in how Telltale created the original adventure. If you've already completed the story, these additions could give you another reason to return and learn more about the work behind the game.

However, the biggest disappointment is the physical release.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered isn't expected to launch with a physical edition; the physical version is scheduled for 2027. That creates an awkward situation for anyone who wants to support the game immediately while also adding a physical copy to their collection.

If you want to play the remaster on day one, you'll need to buy the digital version first. Alternatively, you can wait for the physical edition, but that means delaying your purchase until next year. For players who prefer physical games, neither option is particularly appealing when they've been looking forward to the remaster.

The situation also raises concerns about The Wolf Among Us 2. If the sequel arrives next fall without a physical release alongside its digital version, fans could face the same problem again. Depending on the timing, its physical edition could be pushed into 2028.

That could leave some players feeling as though they have to buy the game twice. You could buy the digital version at launch and then pick up the physical edition later. However, that's an additional expense for fans who simply want to support the developers while owning their preferred version.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered Gameplay Features

Despite this frustration, the delayed physical release isn't necessarily a reason to avoid the remaster. Supporting the game remains important, particularly given Telltale's history and the significance of bringing the series back. Still, fans would find it much easier to support it if both editions were available at launch.

At the same time, the remaster shouldn't be treated as the ultimate test of Telltale's future.

While its success would certainly be welcome, The Wolf Among Us 2 is arguably more important to the studio's long-term prospects. The sequel represents a bigger step toward re-establishing the franchise and showing that Telltale can keep producing games.

PM Studios is involved in bringing The Wolf Among Us 2 to players, and getting the project across the finish line will be an important step for the series. If you want to see more adventures featuring Bigby Wolf, the sequel could be the most important release.

That doesn't make the remaster any less important. It offers a chance to bring Bigby and the world of Fabletown back to audiences while giving longtime fans another reason to revisit the original story. Its performance could also demonstrate that there is still an audience interested in the franchise.

There are also reasons to revisit the original beyond checking out the updated visuals.

After roughly a decade without playing it, returning to the game can feel fresh, even if you remember its major story moments. Playing the original before the remaster also gives you a useful baseline to compare the two versions once the updated edition becomes available.

During a recent replay on PS5 using the PS4 physical version, the original game ran reasonably well. Occasional glitches, flickering, and other minor technical problems appeared, but they weren't frequent enough to seriously affect the experience. The game also seemed to run at around 60 frames per second, so it didn't have many major performance problems that clearly needed addressing.

That leaves the remaster with a relatively straightforward task. Cleaning up the remaining technical issues and improving the visuals would be welcome, but the original game doesn't appear to need a complete technical overhaul.

If the developers can address the smaller problems without introducing new ones, the updated release could provide a smoother way to experience the adventure.

Replaying the game also lets you approach Bigby Wolf differently. Your choices shape how he interacts with other characters, and being more understanding creates an interesting dynamic throughout the story. Instead of leaning into his reputation as the Big Bad Wolf, you can try to be as reasonable and considerate as possible.

During an earlier playthrough, taking a more extreme approach meant making some brutal decisions, including ripping off one of the Tweedle brothers' arms when given the opportunity. That choice wasn't repeated during the recent replay, which focused on being more of a goody-two-shoes.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered Pricing

With the game fresh in memory, the remaster could be an opportunity to reverse those decisions and see how the experience changes. Revisiting familiar moments with a different approach may not completely transform the story, but it can still make another playthrough worthwhile.

Ultimately, The Wolf Among Us Remastered looks like a worthwhile purchase for anyone who wants to return to Telltale's original adventure. The visual updates appear promising, the additional behind-the-scenes material is welcome, and the original game remains enjoyable enough to justify another playthrough.

The delayed physical edition remains the biggest concern, especially for players who want to support the game on day one without giving up their preference for physical ownership. The remaster may not determine Telltale's future on its own, but it is another step toward bringing the franchise back.

If the remaster performs well and The Wolf Among Us 2 delivers, fans could have plenty of reasons to return to Fabletown. For now, the updated edition offers a chance to revisit Bigby's story, even if deciding when and how to buy it isn't as simple as it should be.
