Let's talk about the games you need for the Switch 2 this Christmas. The list shows the full range, from huge AAA ports to old-school Nintendo magic, all on a handheld console hybrid that keeps surprising people.
These games show off the real capabilities of the Switch 2, whether you're just starting out or have a lot of games already.

Assassin's Creed Shadows
This game is one of the best AAA ports of the Switch 2 generation so far, and it's what we're starting with. It's amazing enough that this new Assassin's Creed game is coming out right away for Switch 2.
If you like the look and feel of samurai, this installment really goes for it by combining historical aspects with the well-known Assassin's Creed model. One thing we love about the series is how it can take place in different places and feature different characters. Shadows really captures that feeling of diversity.
You control two different characters, and the game runs very smoothly in both handheld and docked modes, which really stands out. It feels like a bold claim about what the Switch 2 can do in the future, and it's a great example of how to optimize a AAA game on a handheld system.
Star Wars Outlaws
In the same boat, Ubisoft keeps showing amazing power on Switch 2 with Star Wars Outlaws. A lot of people seem to love hating this game, but we've really liked it since it came out. Some of the anger is probably because you're not a Jedi or some other all-powerful hero.
Rather than having superpowers, you play as a scoundrel, a nobody in the Star Wars world, who relies on stealth and gadgets and plays that are smart.
You sneak around and send your little friend Nix to steal things, and you also take part in exciting chases and fights in space. You can explore space and planets without restrictions, and there are a lot of side tasks. The card and gambling mechanics in the game are incredibly addictive.
Thanks to updates since launch, the game is at its best now and works great on Switch 2. If you're interested, you can get a free demo from the eShop. It's worth a try just to see how fast it really is.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk is the first game that really shocked everyone with its quality. It's a pretty amazing thing to see this game play on Switch 2, since it's so popular as a PC measuring game. Plus, it shows off mouse mode, which is one of the system's coolest features. Mouse mode seems to work perfectly for first-person shooters like Cyberpunk.
We love that CD Projekt Red added so many ways to control the game. You can use gyro controls, classic controller setups, or just a mouse and keyboard. It's a whole different level of precision compared to joysticks, especially when used with the Switch 2 screen's higher refresh rate.
The VRR display makes things feel smoother than you would think, since quality mode is locked at 30 fps and performance mode is around 40 fps. It's pretty amazing that Cyberpunk even works on this gear. It's even cooler that there are lots of different ways to play it.

Hogwarts Legacy
A lot of people talk about Hogwarts Legacy, but it's still a great game. The Switch 2 version offers either a straight purchase or an upgrade path. It provides a deep and polished RPG experience.
It clearly falls into the "big open world" category, with a detailed world, good progression, and fun combat and exploration. It runs much better and is more stable, so people who love RPGs on this platform should definitely try it.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Hollow Knight: Silksong is a 2D side-scrolling Metroidvania that feels almost perfectly suited for the new Switch system. It's on the other end of the range.
It looks great whether docked or handheld, but the larger screen makes it feel better suited to pocket play. In this game, you jump in and get lost, often dying. However, that difficulty is what makes the game fun.
Silksong is hard, pretty, and has a strong mood. It is a fun and satisfying experience if you can handle the fact that you will fail a lot and learn by exploring and failing.
Pokémon Legends Z-A
Pokémon Legends Z-A is actually a Switch One game. Still, there is a special edition for Switch 2 that makes it worth playing again. Pokémon is almost always part of the plan if you're getting a Nintendo device.
This entry is a side step from the standard mainline formula, like the earlier Legends titles. We think it's new and exciting.
In the game, you spend your days catching different kinds of Pokémon in Lumiose City and the places around it. At night, the game changes to a battle-focused mode, which pushes you to rise through the ranks from Z to A.
It's a good starting point for new players, but if you want a more traditional gym experience, Scarlet and Violet on Switch 2 might be better.
Kirby Air Riders
At first, we thought Kirby Air Riders was just another kart racer and didn't play it. It turns out it's a lot more than that. There are many ways to play this game, including top-down choices. It also offers strong support for many players, both online and in person.
Before it came out, Nintendo gave this one several shows, showing that they believed in it. That much attention was worth it. Kirby Air Riders seems well-made, with many features, and is much more ambitious than I thought it would be. Because of this, I would easily suggest it to anyone, even those who were unsure at first.
Mario Kart World
You might have missed out on something great if you didn't get Mario Kart World with your Switch 2. It is essential. This is one of the most thorough and content-rich Mario Kart entries ever made, and it is fun no matter what. You can play by yourself, with friends who are in the same room, or with a full lobby online.
With the open-world features, you can discover new things, unlock outfits, and enjoy the mayhem of 24-player races. The way that skill levels even out makes every match surprising and fun. It is even better for multiplayer games now, thanks to recent changes that make it easy to jump right into private lobbies with friends.
Donkey Kong Bananza
For us, Donkey Kong Bananza is one of the best games for the Switch 2, and it was even our pick for game of the year. It is cheerful, bright, and endlessly interesting. The level design makes players want to explore every direction. It is full of things to collect, smart challenges, and a steady sense of growth.
The story is fun, the challenge increases sensibly, and the game gives you the kind of happy feeling that we expect from a great Nintendo game. It isn't childish or serious at any point. This is one of the most fun things to do on Switch 2, especially for people who like single-player games.
Metroid Prime 4 Beyond
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is one of Nintendo's more serious games. The game is what really sold us on mouse mode; it changed how the series feels to play. The performance is truly amazing. The small display can display up to 120 fps, and when docked, the output can be 4K60.
It's amazing to see this level of speed from what is basically a tablet. The game has a darker, moodier tone, and you can only move by gaining new abilities and having to go back to earlier areas. Even though it's the first Prime entry in 18 years, it's easy for beginners to get into and has enough depth for completionists, especially with different difficulty levels.
Resident Evil on Switch 2
If we look ahead, we can also see something big in the early part of the next year. Resident Evil 9 comes out on February 27 for Switch 2, the same day it comes out on other devices. For people who want the full experience, there is also a limited-edition Switch 2 Pro controller and a package that comes with Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8.
These slick, intense games for adults mark an important event with their arrival. Nintendo devices used to miss out on or get big third-party releases late, but that isn't the case anymore. It's a good sign for the future of Switch 2 that a major Capcom game is coming to it at the same time as other platforms.

Final Thoughts
In the end, these games show how the Switch 2 has become a must-have system. The system has games for almost every taste, from huge AAA games for adults to classic Nintendo series for everyone. Whether it's your first time picking up a Switch 2 or you're just looking to get more games, this lineup has a lot of reasons to be excited about what the machine can do now and in the future.
