This guide gives clear, practical steps to start strong in Where Winds Meet. It covers difficulty choices, combat basics, gearing, exploration, progression caps, and smart resource use. Read each section and apply the tips to avoid common early mistakes and speed up meaningful progress.

Difficulty and Deflection Assist

Choose Recommended difficulty for the most balanced early experience; it gives a fair challenge without altering XP or loot quality. Legendary and Hardcore are for players training for PvP or for those seeking extreme challenge—Hardcore is permanent death.

The Deflection Assist option appears on Story and Recommended difficulties and eases parry timing. It helps at first, but relying on it can reinforce bad habits. Learn perfect parries and dodges yourself to improve long-term performance.

Solo vs Multiplayer

Solo mode contains the main story, side missions, and most open-world activities from level one to roughly level 60–70. Multiplayer swaps some solo content for high-level group content such as group dungeons, open-world boss raids, guild versus guild battles, and arena duels.

NPCs in hubs often disappear in multiplayer to make room for many players. Solo is not completely empty—other players can still appear and you can form parties by invite.

Mastering Combat

Combat is action-focused and rewards skill. Focus on Deflections (perfect parries) early: they drastically reduce incoming damage and break enemy posture, opening instant finisher opportunities.

Use the parry key (E) or the block-to-parry method (hold block, then attack) to mitigate risk. Perfect dodges slow time and are useful, but perfect parries remain the highest priority for damage and control. Practice timing to animation-cancel and chain stagger windows for faster kills.

Balancing Builds and Gear

Balance damage and utility in early builds. Pair weapons and gear that synergize. For example, combining Nameless Sword with Panacea Fan grants strong sustain because Panacea Fan boosts healing.

Follow the in-game Improvement Guide under the character development menu for set and weapon recommendations. Preserve set bonuses like the Hawking Set when possible. Use Auto Enhance while leveling up to about level 50–60 to save time.

Later, prioritize specific synergy combos such as using Rope Dart abilities with Infernal Blades, or applying the Drum Beast effect via Stormbreaker Spear heavy attacks to empower Thundercry Blade and Predator Shield.

Breakthroughs and Level Caps

Pay attention to level caps every ~10 levels. When the UI shows Level Cap Needs To Be Increased, complete the required Mausoleum Trials to break through. Breakthroughs increase your max level, max energy, core stats, and the strength and rewards of enemies.

They also grant rewards at the newly unlocked cap. Ignoring breakthroughs wastes XP. Prioritize these short trial sets as they unlock permanent progression gains.

Follow The Main Narrative and Side Missions

Main story and side missions provide generous XP and unlock key weapons, martial arts, and mystic cards.

Prioritize them from level one to 60 to gain access to better internal arts and essential gear. Side missions also open traversal abilities and unlock resources necessary for later builds.

Oddities Collection and Permanent Upgrades

Look for oddities early and trade them to the Melodies of Peace vendor. Collectible oddities include crickets, beetles, lotus-like purple plants, and other small items found around the world.

Trading five specific oddities grants permanent upgrades such as increased max endurance or boosted vitality required to meet higher mystic art requirements. Use Wind Vision and the minimap insect icons to spot these collectibles fast.

Traversal and Mounts

Improve movement options early. Obtain a horse from initial missions, by taming, or by stealing one; tamed mounts can have superior stats like extra speed or terrain bonuses and can be sold at stables. The best traversal tools are lightness skills.

Complete the Afterglow side mission to learn Meteor Flight, a major horizontal and vertical movement ability. Some regions restrict lightness skills until you unlock the proper keepsakes or medallions.

Exploration and Unlocking Light Skills

Raise exploration level to unlock region-specific keepsakes. For example, leveling the first map’s exploration to level four awards the Afterglow Pendant, enabling the grand light skill and Wall Stride. Kyang has a similar Flight Medallion at exploration level four. Progress exploration by opening map areas, chests, and completing local activities.

Resource Gathering and Crafting

Collect everything not fixed to the ground: flowers, fruits, pebbles, ores, feathers, and other materials are used in mystic arts, martial arts upgrades, and slot enhancements. Use Wind Stance or Wind Vision to sense nearby gatherables.

Loot enemy bodies often for upgrade drops. Check the resource menu to see which activities or enemies drop specific materials and plan routes that maximize gathering efficiency.

Illnesses, Treatment, and Healer Jobs

Character illnesses can debilitate if untreated. Check the red illness icon near the minimap for details and follow in-game instructions to treat minor ailments (for example, standing knee-deep in water to self-heal certain afflictions).

Clinics in early regions will treat basic conditions, albeit at a cost. If an illness becomes untreatable, post a bounty for another player healer to assist. The game also supports job progression—Healer and Scholar paths are available and can be lucrative and rewarding.

Guilds and Daily Rewards

Join a guild as soon as possible. Guild membership unlocks daily, weekly, and periodic rewards that award extra XP and Jade, a premium resource.

Simply interacting in the guild hall or participating sporadically generates valuable returns that compound over time. Guilds also make it easier to access group content later on.

Smart Jade Spending

Spend Jade on long-term gains. Prioritize permanent upgrades: scrolls for internal arts, mystic arts, or martial arts, and items that help with breakthroughs.

Avoid spending Jade on low-level gear chests or consumables early—gear will be replaced often. Save premium purchases until around level 60–70 when legendary rewards become relevant.

Exploration Tips and Wind Tools

Use Wind Vision and Wind Stance to detect hidden items and oddities. Look for visual cues: beehives in trees indicate crickets, red mushrooms often hide beetles, and purple lotus plants usually hide special collectibles. Monitor the minimap for insect icons to avoid missing key resources.

Final Practical Tips

Practice perfect parries and dodges to build strong mechanical foundations. Keep breakthrough requirements in mind to avoid wasting XP. Tame or obtain better mounts for long-distance travel. Join a guild for routine rewards and social support.

Save premium resources for permanent progression gains. Prioritize exploration to unlock keepsakes and movement skills that transform how quickly you traverse the world.
