ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 Doom Edition Review and Performance Test

A limited-edition GPU that blends Doom-inspired design with top-tier performance and craftsmanship

Back at Computex earlier this year, the limited-edition Doom: The Dark Ages graphics card made its debut — the ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 Doom Edition. After months of anticipation, it's finally here.

Only 666 units are available, and it's part of a $2,000 bundle. The package includes a few themed extras such as a t-shirt, an oversized mouse pad, a yellow key card replica, and a copy of the game with an exclusive skin.

First Impression

The box itself is beautifully designed, featuring striking Doom-themed artwork. After carefully slicing it open, the first reveal is breathtaking — a heavy, luxurious GPU adorned in a mix of gold and green tones. The detailing on the fan blades, the side trim, and even the backplate is exceptional.

It instantly stands out as one of the most visually impressive cards we've seen.

When holding it, the craftsmanship becomes even more apparent. The fan has a glowing eye effect, and the design perfectly reflects the Doom theme. It feels not just like a gaming part but also something made for collectors.

Building the Doom-Themed PC

To showcase the card, we decided to install it inside our custom-built Doom: The Dark Ages PC. The setup features a 3D-printed demon skull on top, small horns on the sides, and chains with hanging ram skulls for that extra infernal touch. Inside, we added red-painted AIO cooling, custom Doom decals on the motherboard, and 3D-printed skulls and symbols on the fan shrouds.

Sliding the RTX 5080 Doom Edition into this build felt natural — the backplate art even matched the front case decal perfectly. Once everything was secured and powered up, the glowing red accents and fan lighting tied the whole aesthetic together beautifully.

First Boot and Design Impressions

When the system came to life, the GPU instantly stole the show. The Doom-themed fan shroud, the glowing elements, and the backplate art aligned perfectly with the overall design.

The way the fan illumination resembled a demonic eye behind the skull was especially striking. Seeing the golden finish through the tempered glass side panel added a premium touch that elevated the entire setup.

Testing the Performance

We tested Doom: The Dark Ages at 4K resolution with every setting turned up to see how powerful the card is, including path tracing. At first, performance was good enough, but activating Nvidia DLSS 4 in performance mode provided a noticeable FPS boost.

DLSS basically renders the game at a lower resolution, then uses AI to upscale it back to 4K, keeping image quality while improving performance.

Taking a step further by enabling DLSS Frame Generation at 4x, which uses AI to add an extra three frames between the real ones. The results were amazing — nearly 180 FPS in the same scene, effortlessly hitting the monitor's 165 Hz refresh rate.

The game looked smooth and had a sharp visual quality. The tensor cores inside the GPU handled the workload with ease, making it feel almost magical.

Final Thoughts

The ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 Doom Edition is really one of the most unique and best-looking GPUs seen in a long time. It combines build quality, detailed design, and high-end performance, making it a true collector's item for both enthusiasts and Doom fans.

While this unit was only a loaner, we're seriously considering getting one for ourselves. If anyone wants to buy it, it's available in limited numbers through ASUS and Nvidia. If anyone is lucky enough to get it, it would truly be a showpiece that celebrates the Doom legacy.
