The PC hardware consumer market is giving mixed messages. Memory and storage prices are high, yet those interested in PCs are not very excited. Meanwhile, CPU launches continue to roll on with new and repeat items.

This week, the last bits of a once-great world of consumer electronics fell apart. Although the cost of RAM and SSDs is at an all-time high and interest among PC enthusiasts is at an all-time low, interest in CPUs remains. Intel is making people eager about Nova Lake, and AMD appears to be preparing both older and newer Ryzen processors for X3D. The rest of a PC, including memory and storage, is not as good, so the emphasis shifts to CPUs.

AMD takes a Second look at the Ryzen 7 5800X3D

It has been rumored that AMD could reintroduce the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The information source is HXL, which has been reliable in the past. Many people believed the processor was one of the best AM4 gaming CPUs, and they realized it was no longer in stock with the 5700X3D. This became more significant as RAM prices rose, since DDR4 systems were more cost-effective.

The story started with a picture said to be from an AMD slide deck showing the 5800X3D specs, with a label reading "AM4 10th Anniversary Edition." It claims that the specifications have not changed, and a picture of the retail box leaks out. It appears to be so, though it needs to be verified by AMD. The fact that it has materials in both Chinese and English indicates it could be published globally.

There is Still a Price Concern with a Potential Relaunch

A relaunch on an anniversary doesn't mean that the product will be available or that the price will be competitive. The new Ryzen 7 2700X, released on an anniversary, costs the same as the original model, i.e., 329. Yet, since it was in short supply, prices increased, whereas ordinary models dropped to less than $300.

5800X3D launched in April 2022 for $450. It would have to compete with newer options today, such as the 7800X3D or 9800X3D, which also cost the same at that price. Individuals will only be interested in the relaunch when they can verify their relaunch, stock is sufficient, and the price is below 300. This is particularly true because the 5700X3D already fell to about 200 last year.

AMD Gets Ready to Release the Ryzen 9 9950X3D Dual Edition

AMD is also getting ready to unveil its latest processor. This 9950X3D dual edition will be available on April 22 at 9:00 AM EST. It has been priced at 899, though an early listing attempted to sell it at 1000; that was corrected. Listings are available, but they are either not available at the moment or will auto-notify.

This processor has over 200 MB of cache and is more productive than a gaming processor. For gaming systems, the 9800X3D or 9950X3D can be less expensive and offer better deals.

Intel's Nova Lake Specifications Indicate there will be Rivalry in the Next Generation

Roadmap leaks have revealed Intel's next Nova Lake CPUs, which are also known as the Core Ultra 400 series. The range reportedly has 13 SKUs, with TDPs of up to 175W on dual-die models and core counts of 6 to 52.

A Core X might include more expensive models, such as the 44- and 52-core models. These models have additional cache, which helps them run games effectively. The 28-core Ultra 9 and 24-core Ultra 7 both have the capability.

Each CPU must have four low-power cores, Wi-Fi 7 support, ECC memory compatibility, and an integrated graphics unit capable of driving four monitors. It can also support up to 8 SSDs over PCIe Gen4 and Gen5, two Thunderbolt 5 connections, and use existing cooling. The new LGA1954 socket potentially could support more than a single generation of CPUs, and the large-scale production is planned to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The GPU Market is not Currently very Active, and the RTX 3060 is Returning

There are still just a few new GPUs coming out, and costs are slowly going up. Reports say Nvidia is preparing to bring back the RTX 3060 12GB variant, which launched in early 2021. This will be back in the vicinity of June.

The 12GB version is better than the 8GB version; it still works and performs better with Intel Arc A770 or Radeon RX 6600 XT. Newer GPUs, the RTX 5050 and RTX 4060, are about 15-17% faster. This renders price as a highly considerate factor in 2026.

The RTX 5050 refresh, with 9GB of memory and a 96-bit bus, is rumored to have been delayed. Competition in the manufacturing industry can make it harder to make things. For example, newer GPUs employ more in-demand fabrication technologies than older ones, such as the RTX 3060, which uses Samsung's 8nm process.

Lagging in Data Centers can Reduce the Hardware Pressure

On a larger scale in the industry, the problem of data center delays is believed to benefit PC hardware supply. The need for data centers has led to a global shortage of parts. A geospatial data provider suggested that issues with regulations, the supply chain, and insufficient infrastructure, including power availability, are reasons for the delays.

Laws, such as those that would limit the construction of new data centers, also slow growth. Such measures might, over time, alleviate pressure on hardware supply lines.

The Stop Killing Games Movement is on the Rise

Stop Killing Games is an ongoing movement that demands that games remain playable even when developers cease supporting them. The representatives attended a recent public hearing that included many European Parliament committees. The response was good.

The program aims to maintain older game availability, which is significant given that hardware prices are increasing, and older systems are still in use.

More Ideas and Observations about Hardware

An M.2 adaptor design utilizing PCIe was observed. This allows storage devices to be connected via a PCIe slot and remain flat to the motherboard. The concept addresses the issue of insufficient space around GPUs, but it lacks clear illustrations to demonstrate its functionality.

Cooling solutions were even developed for 12V-2x6 power connectors to address overheating problems. However, this was not developed into a real product.

Final Thoughts

AMD is returning to previous platforms and simultaneously releasing new high-end models, while Intel is preparing an update to its next-generation CPUs. This keeps people interested in PC technology. GPU activity is still low, but other industry issues, such as the need for data centers and measures to preserve software, affect the overall picture.
