Lenovo has introduced a new approach to handheld gaming with its Legion handheld setup, combining the Legion G9 controller with the Legion Tab 4. While the setup boasts impressive features such as high-quality controls, an 8.8-inch display, long battery life, and a powerful CPU, it differs from traditional handhelds.

Legion G9 is a two-part device: the controller itself does not include a screen, CPU, or RAM, and is designed to pair with the Legion Tab 4 tablet to function as a full gaming system.

Design and Build

The Legion G9 controller is priced at $99 and is constructed of plastic, featuring a locking system that securely snaps the Legion Tab 4 into place via USB Type-C. The controller enables full tablet functionality, providing access to the front-facing camera, side-firing speakers that can be converted into front-firing output, a 3.5mm audio jack, and USB Type-C connectivity for charging, syncing, or connecting to an external display. dditional design elements include linear triggers with optional hair trigger locks, programmable macro buttons, and a removable midsection for potential cooling system installation.

The controller comes with four extra thumbsticks, allowing customization of the analog sticks to suit personal preference. Once assembled, the overall feel is similar to that of a traditional handheld. Despite being slightly larger than devices like the Steam Deck OLED, the combined setup is lighter and more comfortable to hold.

Software and Customization

Once connected, the Legion G9 and Tab 4 activate the Ultra Controller software, an APK application that serves as a game launcher and controller management system. Within the software, you can update the firmware, adjust the sticks, triggers, and buttons, control RGB lighting, and map onscreen touch points for games that do not natively support controllers.

The software allows adjustment of dead zones, vibration intensity, and individual motor settings for triggers. The D-pad, while slightly concave, performs well for most gaming needs, and all shoulder buttons, power, and volume controls are accessible with the controller attached.

The Ultra Controller software also provides performance metrics. It allows mapping of macro keys, making it a flexible tool for various Android games.

Gaming Performance

The Legion Tab 4, powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite, ensures that no Android game is beyond reach. The 8.8-inch 165Hz display provides smooth visuals, and the controller's hall-based analog sticks prevent drift.

Games like Fortnite can run at 90fps on the highest settings with 100% resolution scale and HD textures. Popular mobile games, such as PUBG, Call of Duty Mobile, and Genshin Impact, are fully compatible with the controller. Full controller support eliminates the need for on-screen key mapping.

Emulation is also supported, with the G9 performing well on Dolphin emulator for Wii and GameCube titles, as well as PS2 emulation via Nether SX2. For PC gaming, cloud streaming services like Steam Link, GeForce

Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming let you play with low latency, especially when you stream from a PC that is connected to the internet over Ethernet.

Final Thoughts

The Legion G9 and Tab 4 combo is a novel way to play games on the go, but it's only good for people who already own or plan to buy the Tab 4. The G9 adds $99 to the cost but provides excellent value as an accessory for Android gaming.

However, suppose you are choosing between this setup, a Steam Deck, or a Legion Go for a dedicated handheld experience. In that case, the Steam Deck or Legion Go may be better choices due to their more integrated design.

Legion G9 and Tab 4 make a great gaming setup for Android gamers that like how versatile tablets are and how customizable controllers are. They offer portability, performance, and flexibility all in one package.
