Sony has halted further price hikes for the PlayStation 5 and is reportedly preparing to release a cheaper version. The most recent State of Play, on the other hand, made several major announcements, including remakes, franchise revivals, and new licensed games.

With memory shortages hurting the industry and the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 getting closer, platform holders are now focusing on console supplies.

PS5 RAM Supply Guaranteed Until Holiday 2026

We all know what's going on with RAM, storage, VRAM, and the memory that PCs and consoles need to work. AI data centers are buying up all the supplies; manufacturers would rather sell to businesses with higher margins, and consumer allocation has been tighter. Even big names like Sony, Apple, Microsoft, and Nintendo are fighting for their share of the market.

Rumor has it that Xbox didn't get enough RAM, which could mean that the prices of the SeriesS and SeriesX will go up even more. On the other hand, Sony has adopted the opposite approach by aggressively securing supply. Reports say that enough RAM has been locked in to keep production going through the end of 2026, even during the holidays.

With Grand Theft Auto VI coming out in November, consoles must be available by then. During what may be one of the biggest game releases ever, neither Sony nor Xbox can afford to have empty shelves. People in the industry say that marketing will pick up speed in the summer and that preview events are already underway. Everything suggests that the announced release window will hold.

The safest approach is to have more PS5 units than we expect people to want. When a release of this size comes out, you don't want to run out of stock. The industry sees this game as a catalyst, and Sony has put supply first.

Speculation about the PS5's Entry-level Specs

Even when they get memory, prices are still high. Sony wants to make money selling hardware, but the PS5 is currently selling for the same price or more than it did at launch. Some analysts think that a lower-cost PS5 may be in the works.

The problem is figuring out what "entry-level" implies, since there is already a digital-only PS5. One option is to cut the storage space to 512GB. That would leave fewer than 300GB of accessible space after the system allocation. However, the internal SSD expansion slot is still open. Users might add a 1TB or 2TB drive if needed, even if SSD prices are high.

A different choice might be a configuration with less power. Sony might use lower-performing PS5 APUs in a mode that lowers performance, just as GPUs are binned, so not every chip matches top-tier specifications. That would be like the SeriesS plan. The concern is whether developers would have to support that setup, which affected how Xbox games were made.

Saving up for the regular PS5, buying used ones, looking at bundles, or using marketplace listings may be better long-term investments. A lower-power version slows performance without saving you any money. The basic price is projected to remain at $500 or higher for now. However, stability is a good thing given the current market conditions.

State of Play Makes Big Announcements

The recent State of Play started out poorly, but halfway through, it turned into a lineup full of important news. Right away, a few announcements stuck out.

Sony said that Santa Monica Studio is remaking God of War 1-3. There isn't much information yet. These will likely follow the same framework as the original titles or use battle systems more like those in the Norse-era games.

We grew up with the Greek saga and played each new game as it came out. Going back to that time makes people excited, no matter the final design approach. Sons of Sparta, a 2.5D Metroidvania-style game with younger versions of Kratos and Deimos, has also come out.

Motion Twin's New Castlevania

Motion Twin, the company that made Dead Cells, is working on a new Castlevania game. A lot of people thought this would happen after their Castlevania DLC. The game is set to release in 2026, indicating that Konami is bringing the franchise back.

We were looking forward to this collaboration, and you can see how the studio's experience aligns with the series' design philosophy.

The John Wick Game by Saber Interactive

Saber Interactive is developing a new John Wick game that may feature Keanu Reeves' likeness. Saber has worked on licensed games such as Evil Dead: The Game and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

The trailer's combat and gunplay suggest the game will emphasize close-quarters choreography and gun accuracy. We trust the studio's experience with adaptations, and you can see that faith in the reveal.

Expansion of the Metal Gear Solid Collection

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will include Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Metal Gear Solid 4 has only been playable on PS3 hardware for years, which makes this port important. PeaceWalker, which many people consider a structural forerunner to ThePhantomPain, is also back.

We think of PeaceWalker as the first game in the series, and you might see systems that subsequently defined the genre.

Final Thoughts

There were also updates to StarWarsGalacticRacer, 007FirstLight, SilentHillTownfall, Marathon, Pragmata, BeastofReincarnation, and Sorrowos. Silent Hill Townfall has a different location and tone, in line with the franchise's trend of different interpretations. We like that each Silent Hill project takes a distinct path, and you can choose whichever one you like best.

In general, the event changed what many had expected. The schedule still makes 2026 look like a good year, even with delays. The God of War trilogy remakes, Castlevania, and Silent Hill: Townfall are still our top picks. The platform is now at a crucial stage, as hardware supply has stabilized and major releases are approaching.
