XBOX ROG Ally X20 Gets OLED Display and TMR Joysticks

Xbox ROG Ally X20, a new handheld game PC, can now be pre-ordered for as little as $1,299.99. It will be available on October 15, 2026. The handheld is the same as the Z2 Extreme, but it has a larger OLED screen, TMR joysticks, a new D-pad, redesigned face buttons, and a 20th-anniversary black-and-gold design.

Xbox ROG Ally X20 is now available to pre-order, starting at $1,299.99. At over $1,000, it is more than many people want to spend on a handheld. The standalone Xbox Ally X20 costs $1,299, while an ultimate bundle with ROG AR glasses costs $2,500. You can pre-order the handheld through Best Buy or ASUS.

Xbox ROG Ally X20 Price and Availability

According to Pure Xbox, ASUS announced that the system will be available for purchase ahead of its official release date of October 15, 2026. The ROG Ally X20 can be purchased either as a standalone handheld or as part of an ultimate bundle that includes the ROG X Real 1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses.

One of the biggest changes to the ROG Ally X20 is the larger OLED display. The existing ROG Ally lineup has used the same 16:9 aspect ratio, while the new model moves toward the size of the Steam Deck OLED. A larger display has been something many handheld users have wanted from the ROG Ally.

An 8-inch display would have been preferable, similar to the AYANeo 2, or even a display around the size of the Nintendo Switch 2. The current screen isn't dramatically larger than other handhelds, but the OLED panel brings it closer in size to the Steam Deck OLED. The 16:9 aspect ratio is still a limitation. There is still a fair amount of bezel around the display, with a particularly thick bottom bezel. 

A 16:10 display, or another aspect ratio, could use the available display space more effectively and potentially let the screen move closer to 8 inches. Steam Deck and Legion Go already use displays that make better use of the available space. A larger panel with smaller bezels could make a noticeable difference, especially on a handheld costing around $1,300.

TMR Joysticks and Other Changes

Xbox ROG Ally X20 includes several improvements over the existing ROG Ally X. It features a bigger OLED display and TMR joysticks, which should address concerns about joystick drift. For a device costing around $1,300, TMR joysticks are an important addition. The system also includes a new D-pad and redesigned face buttons.

The OLED display is another major improvement. Once OLED becomes part of a handheld, it can be difficult to return to a traditional display. The rich blacks and vibrant colors make games stand out, and the difference is especially noticeable on an OLED panel. ROG Ally X20 uses translucent black plastic for the chassis, giving it a look reminiscent of an earlier era of gaming hardware.

The translucent design also lets you see the revamped cooling system and internal structure. The handheld uses AMD silicon and features gold-accented internal components designed for the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Gamers' formation in 2006. The black-and-gold design gives the system a different appearance from the standard ROG Ally models.

The Same Z2 Extreme Performance

The Xbox button is also a notable part of the design. A dedicated Xbox button makes sense for an Xbox-branded handheld, while RGB lighting around the sticks and the gold internal elements continue the ROG design. The colored Xbox controller buttons might have clashed with the minimalist black-and-gold look, but the overall design still focuses on the anniversary theme.

The most important point for existing ROG Ally X owners is that the Xbox ROG Ally X20 is not more powerful than the Ally X already on the market. It uses the same Z2 Extreme APU, so there is no reason to rush out and replace an existing Ally X purely for performance. The improvements are mainly quality-of-life changes, including the OLED display, TMR joysticks, D-pad, face buttons, and redesigned hardware.

For anyone who already owns an Xbox ROG Ally X, the current model still provides the same core performance. The new model is more about the display and other hardware changes than a performance upgrade.

The $1,299.99 price can be hard to justify, especially compared with other handheld gaming PCs. However, a device using the same Z2 Extreme APU, such as the Legion Go, is already selling for more than $2,000 in some cases and could see another price increase.

That makes the Xbox ROG Ally X20 look more reasonable, especially with the OLED display and other hardware changes. At the same time, $1,300 is still a lot of money for a handheld. The larger OLED display is probably the biggest reason to consider the new model.

The TMR joysticks and redesigned controls also add practical improvements, while the black-and-gold design gives the system its own identity. If you're thinking about getting the Xbox ROG Ally X20, you need to decide if the $1,299.99 price is worth the OLED screen and better hardware. People who already own an Ally X have the same Z2 Extreme speed, so they don't need to upgrade to play games faster.
