Avalanche Job Listing Hints at Online Hogwarts Game
A new job posting hints at online multiplayer, dueling, Quidditch, and possibly a second game entirely separate from Hogwarts Legacy 2.

There have been many whispers about Hogwarts Legacy 2 lately, but it seems that a new job listing could shed some light on the matter. Rumors state that the new installment in the franchise would introduce multiplayer modes with player-versus-player duels and Quidditch games.
However, there is a chance that it may not be Hogwarts Legacy 2 at all, but a completely different spin-off. According to a report, Hogwarts Legacy 2 could be heading toward online multiplayer, based on a job listing. Job postings from Avalanche Software have been worth watching for a while now, since they tend to reveal what's coming next for the franchise.

This specific opening is for a Senior Software Engineer role at Avalanche Software.
It points to the studio behind the original open-world hit, working on backend infrastructure for an online multiplayer RPG. The listing describes someone who would work alongside engineering, art, and design leads to help build out secure and scalable systems that can support a live multiplayer experience.
The role also involves handling things like player data storage, matchmaking, lobby systems, and server infrastructure , all core pieces needed to run an online game smoothly. This lines up with the idea that Avalanche Software is actively building something online, separate from a traditional single-player release.
At the same time, other listings from the studio point toward continued work on a single-player RPG, too. That's a strong signal that there are actually two separate Hogwarts projects in the works. The first would be Hogwarts Legacy 2, the single-player sequel most fans have been hoping for. It's expected to pick up where the story left off, expand on the scale of the original, and bring plenty of new content and mechanics.
The second project appears to be something different, a standalone MMO-style game, possibly going by the name Hogwarts Online. This version would likely carry the same tone and feel as the original game, but would be built specifically for online play. Picture dueling your friends, joining Quidditch matches, attending classes as a group, exploring the castle together, and tackling quests as a team.
It looks like this online project is being developed on its own track.
While separate listings continue to support the idea of a traditional single-player sequel, most likely Hogwarts Legacy 2. It wouldn't really make sense for the studio to turn the mainline sequel into a fully online experience, since that risks alienating the huge fanbase that loved the original for being a single-player, open-world adventure.
And Hogwarts Legacy 2 isn't the only Harry Potter project currently being worked on. Another listing, this time for a marketing manager role, confirmed that WB Games has multiple Harry Potter titles in development at once. The listing mentioned supporting long-term global marketing plans across PC and console for these titles, and the plural wording alone confirms more than one game is in the pipeline.

This likely doesn't include Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which underperformed after its 2024 launch and has seen its post-launch support stall. Instead of maintaining it as a standalone competitive title, it looks like WB Games is folding Quidditch gameplay directly into this new online RPG alongside Hogwarts Legacy 2
It's worth remembering that Hogwarts Legacy was originally planned as a trilogy, and everything points to that plan still being on track for single-player, open-world entries. At the same time, WB Games clearly wants to lean into live-service style features too, especially after Hogwarts Legacy's massive success, having sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.
One thing missing from the original release was substantial post-launch content or big DLC drops.
Based on the pattern in Avalanche Software's job listings, it looks like the next entry is being planned with post-launch support baked in from day one, rather than added later. There's also the connection to the new HBO Harry Potter series to consider.
Since Hogwarts Legacy ties into that universe, story and lore consistency matter a lot if these games are going to stay canonically connected. That likely means the core narrative will keep unfolding through the single-player game, while the online RPG could run its own separate storyline and add extra depth to the wider lore.
Whether this online RPG is set during the same era or somewhere else entirely on the Wizarding World timeline is still unclear. What is clear is that Avalanche Software is working on an online RPG, and the timing makes sense given how well online RPGs like Genshin Impact and Where Winds Meet have performed.

It seems WB Games wants to bring that same kind of experience into the Wizarding World, a big open world where you can team up with others, take on quests together, duel opponents, jump into PvP, wander around Hogwarts, sit in on classes with friends, and be part of an active online community.
If done right, this could be a great addition to the universe.
Of course, this is as long as it doesn't take anything away from the single-player experience that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is expected to deliver. The job listings also mention systems built for competitive multiplayer, which strongly suggests Quidditch will be a major part of this online project.
This is alongside expanded PvP dueling, something the original game only touched on briefly. Expect both of these systems, dueling and Quidditch, to get a much bigger role in Hogwarts Legacy 2 and whatever this new online RPG turns out to be.
