Hogwarts Legacy 2 still hasn't been officially announced, but in 2026 you've probably noticed the conversation around it has started to feel a lot more serious than just fan speculation. Even without a reveal, the game is already being discussed like it's well into development, with talk of a 2027 or 2028 release window becoming more common.

On one side, there are claims suggesting the sequel could already be fairly deep into production. On the other side, there's still no trailer, no logo reveal, and not even a teaser from Warner Bros. or Avalanche Software. Even so, Hogwarts Legacy 2 continues to sit near the top of the list of most anticipated unannounced games.

A big reason for that is the success of the first game.

Hogwarts Legacy turned into one of Warner Bros.' biggest gaming wins in years. It didn't just pull in Harry Potter fans; it pulled in a wide audience beyond that. The game went on to become one of the best-selling titles of 2023, and according to the latest figures, it has now sold more than 40 million copies.

With numbers like that, it's hard to imagine Warner Bros. just walking away from the franchise. That's why the discussion has shifted from whether Hogwarts Legacy 2 will happen to when it will finally be shown. Even though there's still no official announcement, a mix of job listings, industry comments, and publisher statements has kept expectations alive that development is already happening behind the scenes.

One of the more notable updates came from industry insider Jordan Middler during a VGC podcast discussion. According to his comments, Hogwarts Legacy 2 may already be quite far along in production. If that information is accurate, it suggests the sequel isn't just in early planning stages anymore and could already be in a more advanced development phase than many expected.

Despite that, you haven't seen it appear at any major recent gaming showcases.

Events like Sony's State of Play, Summer Game Fest, and Xbox Games Showcase 2026 all passed without a single reveal or even a small teaser. Not even a logo drop made it into those presentations, which stands out for a game of this scale.

Because of that silence, some industry watchers believe Warner Bros. may be deliberately holding back. For a major sequel like Hogwarts Legacy 2, timing the reveal matters almost as much as the game itself. If the internal target really is somewhere around 2027 or 2028, it would make sense for the publisher to wait for a bigger stage rather than announcing it too early.

Right now, the most commonly discussed release window sits between 2027 and 2028. That timeline lines up fairly naturally with standard AAA development cycles. The original Hogwarts Legacy launched in 2023, so a sequel arriving four to five years later would fall into a normal production range for a large open-world title.

There's also the broader context of Warner Bros. Games strategy.

The company has signaled that it plans to lean back into its strongest franchises in the 2027–2028 period. Within that lineup, Hogwarts Legacy stands out as one of the most obvious candidates for a major return, especially given its commercial success compared to other recent projects in the catalog.

Because of that, attention has started shifting toward The Game Awards 2026 as a possible moment for the first real reveal. Since the game didn't appear during the summer showcases, the end-of-year stage is now seen as one of the more realistic opportunities for Warner Bros. to finally show Hogwarts Legacy 2 in some form, whether that's a teaser or a full announcement trailer.

At the same time, there's another factor that could be influencing timing: GTA 6.

With a release window for Rockstar's next major title, GTA 6, dominating industry attention, other publishers are being cautious about where they place their own big launches. Avoiding overlap with a release of that scale is something many companies are now taking seriously, and Warner Bros. may be adjusting both announcement timing and release plans with that in mind.

While all of that is happening on the business side, the story side of Hogwarts Legacy 2 has also become a major talking point among fans and observers. One of the most discussed theories is that the sequel could take you to the Chamber of Secrets.

This idea isn't based on official information, but it does come from details already present in the first game. In Hogwarts Legacy, you can't actually enter the Chamber of Secrets, but you can find its entrance. In the girls' bathroom near the Slytherin common room, there's a snake symbol on the sinks pointing toward Salazar Slytherin.

Using Revelio reveals the related Field Guide entry, but the entrance remains locked off.

That detail has led to speculation that it might not just be an Easter egg. Some players, however, believe it could be setting the stage for a future story expansion in Hogwarts Legacy 2. The Chamber of Secrets is arguably one of the most iconic locations in the Harry Potter universe, and it’s only natural that the fact its entrance is visible but inaccessible feeds into the theory that it was intentionally saved for later.

When you look at the potential time period the theory goes even further. There has been a lot of speculation about the 1940s as a possible setting, which would coincide with Tom Riddle's years at Hogwarts. This would set the story in the time when the Chamber of Secrets was opened and when darker events were beginning to take shape in the school.

If Hogwarts Legacy 2 were to explore that time period, it would change the tone quite a bit from the first game.

We could see more tension inside Hogwarts instead of focusing so much on exploration and magical school life. A young Tom Riddle growing in power, the early signs of darker magic would set a much different atmosphere naturally.

At the same time, that path would present obstacles, too. The Chamber of Secrets and Tom Riddle are very much tied to the canon of Harry Potter. It would need careful handling to avoid contradictions with the core story for any adaptation set in that period. That balance between creative freedom and canon accuracy could shape how far the sequel is allowed to go in that direction.

Another possibility being discussed is a closer connection between Hogwarts Legacy 2 and HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series. Some earlier reports suggested the game could align with a more modern timeline or at least share a creative direction with the show.

If that proves to be the case, the sequel might not fully commit to the 1940s setting.

Nevertheless, fans have not dismissed the Chamber of Secrets theory, particularly because that storyline is expected to be included in the second season of the HBO series. This allows the game to explore similar themes without retreading the same plot line, perhaps focusing on Tom Riddle's early years instead of the discovery of the Chamber itself.

The theory has also been supported by more in-game details. While the Basilisk itself doesn’t actually make an appearance in the first game, there are references and environmental clues related to Basilisk lore. During the "In the Shadow of the Mountain" quest, for example, you can find signs of petrified creatures and remnants linked to Basilisk-related experimentation in hidden areas.

These elements suggest the game already touched lightly on that mythology without fully expanding it.

Still, none of this has been confirmed by Warner Bros. or Avalanche Software. Everything around the story direction of Hogwarts Legacy 2 remains speculation at this stage, even if some of the clues feel intentional to players who have explored the first game closely.

What is becoming clearer is the overall pattern around the sequel. Hogwarts Legacy 2 has not been officially shown, but there's growing belief that it is actively moving forward in development. The strongest expected release window sits between 2027 and 2028, and The Game Awards 2026 is now seen as one of the most likely moments for its first appearance.

For now, Warner Bros. appears to be keeping things quiet on purpose, likely waiting for the right timing and the right platform to reveal the project. That silence doesn't necessarily point to inactivity. Instead, it suggests a longer-term rollout strategy for one of its biggest gaming franchises.

If current expectations turn out to be accurate, the first real sign of Hogwarts Legacy 2 could arrive within the next major award season or sometime shortly after. Until then, the game remains unannounced, but very much present in industry conversation, with speculation continuing to build around both its release timing and its potential direction.
