Black Ops 7 Is Making Big Moves: Key Beta Changes Are Coming to Launch

From perks to footstep volume, Treyarch is listening and adjusting before the game goes live.

Black Ops 7 is shaping up to be one of the most refined Call of Duty experiences in years, and it all starts with some major changes announced by Treyarch yesterday. After soaking in tons of beta feedback, the developers are rolling out updates that could significantly impact how players approach the game right from launch.

One of the biggest updates revolves around the dexterity perk. In the beta, you had to rely on dexterity to aim down sights while sliding, diving, or wall jumping. Treyarch has decided to make this ability a default feature, meaning players won’t need to run the perk to perform these actions anymore.

That said, dexterity isn’t entirely gone—it will still enhance performance, making movements faster and potentially improving accuracy, similar to how it worked in Black Ops 6. For anyone who hated being locked out of fluid movement without a perk, this is music to their ears.

Also speaking of music, footsteps is also getting an adjustment. The beta had players complaining that footsteps were far too quiet, leading to countless situations where enemies could sprint up behind you unnoticed. Treyarch has slightly increased footstep volume, aiming for a balance where the Ninja perk isn’t mandatory. It’s a small tweak, but one that should make a world of difference for y'all stealth freaks.

Sliding, a staple movement mechanic, is also being tweaked.

The distance and speed of slides will be slightly reduced, though they’re still expected to feel smooth like they did in beta. The adjustment is intended to improve overall game balance. Mantle speeds, which have historically felt sluggish compared to the otherwise fast-paced gameplay, are also being improved across the board. Climbing over ledges should no longer make you feel like an 80-year-old stuck in molasses, and Treyarch hinted that these adjustments could also be tied to perks like dexterity, giving you more control over customization.

Perks, of course, are getting a major overhaul. Treyarch shuffled several perks into new tiers and combined others to make them more useful. Tax Sprinter and Gearhead moved up to tier one, while Scavenger and Tech Mask moved to tier two. Dexterity, Looper, and Coldblooded moved to tier three, opening the door for full stealth loadouts using wildcards.

Beyond tier changes, the developers are addressing feedback that many perks felt too niche. Gearhead now absorbs the effects of the removed Quartermaster perk, making it much more impactful. Assassin has taken on Vendetta, Close Shave now includes Bruiser, Engineer incorporates Shadow’s benefits, and Tracker has absorbed Hunter’s Instinct. The new system is already looking much more balanced, with perks that actually matter rather than just occupying a slot.

Aim assist is another hot topic. Data from the beta showed that controller players had a slight edge in close-quarters combat, while mouse and keyboard players performed better at longer ranges.

Treyarch is considering tweaks to reduce this gap, potentially lowering aim assist for close-range fights while giving slight boosts at longer distances. They’re also rethinking rotational aim assist, which currently tracks enemies automatically as long as the character moves. The proposed change would require actual aiming stick input toward the enemy to activate it.

All of these changes are layered on top of the existing beta adjustments, including the return of classic Call of Duty matchmaking (SBMM) and persistent lobbies as default settings. Treyarch seems committed to listening to player feedback, and for the first time in a while, it feels like a Call of Duty title is really responding to the community in meaningful ways. The updates so far have removed nearly all of the major complaints from the beta.

Even with relatively low community buzz around Black Ops 7 at the moment, the game is starting to look like a dream come true for fans who love Black Ops. Treyarch might just have one of their best Call of Duty releases yet. Black Ops 7’s launch is a game that was fine-tuned by players for players, and after all the feedback and changes, Treyarch might have finally delivered what we've been dying for.
