PC vs. Console Optimization: Optimization Advantage Explained

PC gaming offers more hardware configurations, settings, and performance options, but that flexibility can also create problems that are less common on consoles. Fixed hardware allows developers to target a specific specification, whereas PC games need to support a wide range of CPUs, GPUs, memory configurations, and other hardware.
More developers are finding it easier to optimize for a fixed-spec console, such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X, as opposed to the more open-ended PC platform, which is forever changing and has a zillion hardware configurations to account for. After a long, hard day, nobody wants to have to fiddle with game settings for hours or troubleshoot just to get a game to work.

PC Performance Depends More on User Settings
Games generally just work on consoles and perform relatively well without any of the hassle. There is something to be said about the curated experience and the plug-and-play side of things. On PC, that remains a weak area where platforms such as Steam could step in.
The situation can vary from person to person, and there is a mentality that if performance can be tweaked, it must be tweaked. After discussing the topic, it becomes clear that it is not difficult to get a good experience on a PC if you are willing to use a Medium-tier preset or something like the Nvidia optimizer.
If you accept that what it is doing is good, you can usually get a nice 60fps experience. You can match the consoles, but many people in the PC space want more from the PC experience, which leads them to adjust settings. More than ever, PCs can offer a good, though not perfect, experience that gets close to console-like performance if you are willing to roll with it. Things are improving on that front.
PC Still Has Accessibility Problems
There is something to be said for improving accessibility on the PC side by having a good, tailored experience straight off the bat. That is something that is missing, although optimized settings content exists because there is still a need for it. PCs can be a pain, especially with mid-range or lower-end hardware, when you're trying to dial in the right settings. That can be rather complex.
With an RTX 3090 settings can generally be pushed up for most games, although upscaling can still be used instead of native 4K. There are also all kinds of issues on PCs that go beyond the usual settings problems. Some PC problems include traversal stutters not present on consoles and frame rate issues in some titles not present on consoles. Halo Campaign Evolved is a recent example.
Playing through Halo Campaign Evolved on PC can reveal traversal hitches that are barely experienced on console. On PC, they can appear everywhere and become a constant issue. These are problems that you do not want to contend with when playing a game. However, developers may not find it significantly easier to optimize for fixed-hardware consoles. In most games, aside from some recent outliers such as Halo: Campaign Evolved, PC and console performance can be relatively close.

There may be around a 20% performance difference in favor of the console when comparing what is generally considered equivalent PC hardware, but it is often not a large difference. Consoles and PCs both use AMD hardware and the x86 architecture, so there is little differentiation between them.
That could give PC players an experience closer to what consoles already provide.
Instead of spending time working through graphics options, troubleshooting performance, or finding the right balance between image quality and frame rate, a curated configuration could provide a starting point that works for specific hardware. The flexibility of PC remains one of its strengths, but that same flexibility can make the experience more complicated than console gaming.
Fixed console hardware gives developers a defined target, while PC gaming continues to require support across a wide range of configurations. SteamOS and tools such as Nvidia's optimizer show that PC gaming can become more accessible. The remaining question is how much of that responsibility developers and platforms are willing to take on.
