For its upcoming sequel, Shift Up is introducing new weapons, more in-depth combat, expanded side content, and a larger city, although recent controversies have distracted from the game's development.

Should you have enjoyed Stellar Blade because of its fast-paced combat and the difficulty of its encounters, Blood Rain is likely to prove an interesting sequel. Shift Up has now given out more information about the follow-up, providing a deeper understanding of how the studio intends to build upon the original game's strengths.

Although the sequel is still in its early stages of development, the team has already demonstrated a bigger world, a new main character, and various modifications to the combat system. The recent talks about Blood Rain, however, have mostly centered on the controversies involving its promotion rather than the game itself.

There has also been controversy over Eevee's character design, with some players claiming that she looks younger than Eve from the original game.

Shift Up has said that Eevee is an adult and that she was deliberately made to appear smaller and younger than Eve. The developers have explained that the contrast between her look and her aggressive fighting style is part of how she is characterized, with more context to be provided when players have gone through the full story.

Even if we set the controversies aside, Blood Rain includes a number of gameplay changes that are worth noting. Eevee starts her journey by acting mainly as a close-quarters fighter, using her fists and fast combos a lot. As a result, the combat has a more direct brawler atmosphere in some situations than the sword-based method from the first game.

The extra weapons should give you greater variety without requiring you to give up Eevee's original fighting style. Players who like to use her fists will be able to keep on doing that, while others who would like more choices can try out different weapons and stances.

Every weapon and stance is expected to have its own combos and mechanics, which will provide you with more methods of dealing with different enemies. As a result, the combat in Blood Rain could become much deeper without losing the responsive action that made Stellar Blade stand out.

Shift Up is also returning the combat systems that were responsible for defining the original game, featuring the colored enemy attacks once again, such as the yellow attacks, the blue attacks linked to the Blink counter, and the purple attacks associated with the Repulse ability.

These features urge you to notice the enemies' patterns rather than just attacking as quickly as possible, so parrying and countering should stay at the heart of the experience rather than being substituted by a more simple action system.

The world of the sequel is also being expanded, but it won't turn into a fully open-world game.

The city featured in the trailer is referred to as a linear area and not a completely open environment, so Blood Rain is expected to keep up with the original game's method of combining a main path with larger areas to explore.

Nevertheless, the new city seems to allow for more interaction than some of the areas in Stellar Blade, since you can go into shops and interact with various parts of the environment, and Shift Up has said that more details regarding the city's structure will be revealed later.

The additional interactions might make the world seem more vibrant and provide you with more incentives to go beyond the main storyline. The city already looks busier and more detailed than some of the settings from the original game, which tended to focus on abandoned and desolate areas.

Moreover, shops and other interactive areas could also offer chances to carry out upgrades, obtain cosmetics, engage in side activities, or access other features that have not yet been fully explained. At present, Shift Up is holding many of these details close.

There is also another aspect in which the sequel is expected to make improvements. Although Stellar Blade featured optional missions, a number of them depended heavily on the usual fetch-quest format and could therefore seem less significant than the main parts of the game.

Blood Rain is being designed to include more meaningful side activities, possibly providing you with better reasons to explore the world beyond just sticking to the main storyline. Moreover, optional boss battles would be a pleasant addition since some of the major fights in the original game were quite memorable.

Yet the development timeline is important because Blood Rain is said to have been in development for only about a year.

This means that a great many of its systems are still being worked on. Although Shift Up has already set much of the game's artistic direction, the later parts and the more detailed combat mechanics are still being developed. For this reason, some of the features that have so far been shown might change before the game is finally released.

Although Shift Up had previously set 2027 as the target release date for Blood Rain, that does not mean the date can be regarded as certain. The developers have admitted that the sequel is turning into a bigger project, and the game director has been careful not to give an exact date for its completion.

The team does have an advantage in that most of the original development staff has stayed with the company. The experience they have gained with Stellar Blade's technology and systems might enable the sequel to make progress more efficiently than the first game.

The current situation regarding the platforms is by no means final. Although Shift Up has stated that it wants Blood Rain to reach as many players as possible, the studio has not yet decided on every platform for the sequel.

Stellar Blade first came out on the PlayStation 5 before being made available for PC, whereas Blood Rain will be self-published by Shift Up rather than being published through PlayStation; this gives the studio greater control over its release strategy and may enable it to take a different approach with the sequel.

Even though there is controversy about Blood Rain, the game itself is becoming more interesting.

The combat seems to be growing without giving up the counter and parry systems, which made the first game enjoyable. The addition of new weapons, different stances, a more interactive city, and better side content might provide the sequel with a great deal more variety while still retaining the basic character of Stellar Blade.

At the moment, the main problem is that the gameplay improvements are being overshadowed by the discussion about Shift Up's promotional choices. Since the AI music video and the controversy over Eevee's design have attracted so much attention, the actual progress being made on the game has tended to be neglected.

The most effective way for Shift Up to change the focus of the conversation will likely be to show more of Blood Rain and to illustrate how the new combat, world, and side activities function in practice. More gameplay footage would also give players a better idea of how far the sequel has come and whether these new additions genuinely improve on the original.

At the moment, Blood Rain is still some way from being released, but its direction is becoming more clear. It will feature a combat system based on that of Stellar Blade, a protagonist with a greater variety of weapons, a more interactive city, and side content that is intended to give players more compelling reasons to explore.

Since the game is still in its early stages of development, there is still a lot of time for Shift Up to improve those systems and deal with the weaker points of the original. Should the studio be able to retain the strengths of Stellar Blade while at the same time making the sequel deeper and more varied.
