Blizzard isn’t Done Taking Down WoW Servers Yet
After Turtle WoW shut down, Dalaran WoW is also shutting down, and Ascension is being sued, which is a big change in how Blizzard handles private servers.

Private World of Warcraft sites have been in a strange place for years. They were not official, and Blizzard knew they were there, but many of them kept going for years without any big problems. It looks like that unstable balance is ending now. Turtle WoW, one of the most famous private World of Warcraft servers, was shut down just a few weeks ago.
Now, Blizzard is continuing their crackdown with another big victim. Dalaran WoW, a Wrath of the Lich King server that has been around since 2012, has stated that it is closing down. This means the end of a community that has been together for more than ten years.

It’s sad that the server is being closed since it was getting old and Dalaran WoW had become one of the best Wrath of the Lich King experiences outside of Blizzard’s official environment. This was a place where many players could enjoy one of the most beloved add-ons of the game even after its original era was over.
In a farewell letter to players, the server team thanked the community for years of support. They also spoke of friendships, raids, battlegrounds and memories made along the way. It made me think of how these sites aren’t always just places to play games. They evolve into towns with their own history and society over time.
Many MMO fans are interested in when Dalaran WoW shut down because it fits with a bigger trend that has been going on all through 2026. A few weeks ago, Blizzard sued Turtle WoW, which shut down the server. Now, it looks like the company is eyeing up another large private server.
Blizzard has also sued Ascension, which is one of the biggest and best known private World of Warcraft projects going at the moment.
Reports say that the company wants both the computer to be shut down and money to make up for it. If this case proceeds, Ascension could be the next major private server that Blizzard kills off, in what is fast becoming their most difficult battle against private servers in years.
What makes this case unique is how hard the law is being enforced. There have been instances before where Blizzard has shut down private sites, but those instances were usually one-off events that happened over a number of years. Many players are wondering in the background what has changed since multiple servers are being attacked in a short amount of time this time.
One idea that’s been popular among the World of Warcraft community is that Blizzard might be working on something bigger for the Classic crowd. For years, there have been rumors of a possible “Classic Plus” project, but never anything publicly said.

The idea behind Classic Plus is simple: take the core of the original World of Warcraft and expand upon it with new material, features and ways to level up while maintaining the spirit of the original game. Interestingly enough, many private servers have been experimenting with that formula for years, adding their own material and giving Blizzard’s classic MMO a new spin.
Fans have speculated that this connection may mean Blizzard is trying to clear the field before announcing plans of its own. There’s no clear evidence that a Classic Plus project exists, but the recent legal actions have had people talking about it more. In the meantime, Blizzard's legal stance stays clear.
Private servers use the company's ideas and inventions without permission.
Blizzard can protect its games, brands, and copyrighted content in the end, no matter how popular a server gets or how long it lasts. This has always been the case for private servers, but when a project runs fifteen or ten years it is easy to forget. Many players put thousands of hours into their characters, their guilds and their communities on these sites, creating a sense of stability that never really existed.
The best example of this is perhaps the shutdown of Dalaran WoW. Even one of the most well-known private worlds couldn't avoid the changes that happened after more than fourteen years online.
Still, some teams that used to have private servers are already planning for the future. Sources say that members of the Turtle WoW group have started working on their own game project, using the skills they've learned from running a successful MMO community for years.
Instead of building on top of a current intellectual property, it looks like they want to make something completely new. For many people, that may be the most interesting thing that came out of Blizzard's attack. A lot of sites are shutting down, but some people may use this time to start over and make new worlds.

But for now, there’s still plenty of uncertainty in the World of Warcraft private server community. Dalaran WoW has fallen to the ever-expanding list of projects being shut down. Ascension is being legally challenged, and there’s a chance that many server operators are watching the situation closely.
No longer is it a question of whether or not Blizzard will move. The next question is how many more long-standing private worlds could be taken away before this part of the World of Warcraft story is over.
