Disney Unveil New Racer
Walt Disney Co. are working on a new racing video game by the name of Split/Second, which is set to employ new graphics-rendering tool technologies, that will pit racers against one another on both the track and via triggers, such as explosions that can be controlled by competitors. An early preview of the game saw an air traffic control tower come crashing onto a runway.
These triggers are also set to change tracks mid race, so one minute you may be driving on one course, until someone blows open an exit into a completely different one. An interesting idea to say the least, and if implemented correctly could change the way we play not only racing games, but video games as a whole.
This comes off the back of Disney wanting to create “huge memorable moments on par with the biggest blockbuster action films,” as Nick Baynes, game director states. He continues “Action racing has captured the imagination of video game fans worldwide and we’re going to redefine that experience.”
The England-based Black Rock Studio will be leading the charge, the same people who brought us the off-road racer - Pure, which was received well by many critics. They aim to deliver their promises of a game that feels more like a movie by using a "deferred renderer" that can generate hundreds of virtual light sources, including ones on exploding particles of buildings. This will be backed up by "fluid dynamics" that allow the game to run more smoothly.
The game is scheduled to be released in early 2010 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
