News by Craig Bryan on Jun 16, 2010
Sony’s much-anticipated press conference started on a controversial note - with debates about the importance and actual need for 3D technology raging on throughout the industry – they highlighted their intentions to push forward with their plans to take gaming to a whole new visual level. The show also inadvertently focused on rivals Microsoft, with constant back-handed insults aimed at their attempts at to create a 3D gaming environment of their own.
The audience were all given 3D glasses to watch footage of Killzone 3, which Sony claims will do for 3D gaming what Avatar did for 3D movies – a very bold claim indeed. The in-game action seemed to go down very well and there was an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction from what they saw. The game also looks stunning in 2D.
Other notable upcoming titles that are to be given the 3D treatment are:
MotorStorm Apocolypse, Gran Turismo 5, Crysis 2, Mortal Kombat, Shaun White Skateboarding, Ghost Recon Future Warrior and NBA 2K11.
President and Group CEO Kaz Hirai uttered one particular sentence at the conference that will make both friends and foes stand up and take notice of what Sony are doing, and that was, “What PlayStation did for Blu-ray, we're now ready to do for 3D.”
