If you have been keeping up with Nintendo news lately, you have probably noticed that things have been unusually quiet. That is why this latest rumor about a possible Nintendo Direct in the third week of February is getting so much attention.

Before you get too excited, though, it is important to remember that this is still just a rumor. Nothing has been confirmed, and nothing is guaranteed. You are being asked to take everything with a grain of salt and keep your expectations in check.

According to a report circulating online, Nintendo may be planning a mainline Direct during the third week of February, and it could include the first look at a new 3D Mario game for the Nintendo Switch 2.

If that sounds familiar, it is because this idea has been floating around for a while. In fact, it has been predicted since January, not because of insider sources, but because the timing simply makes sense.

You are hearing about the rumor from someone who has been watching Nintendo’s patterns for years and trying to connect the dots.

When you look at Nintendo’s history, February has always been a big month for Directs. It is almost tradition at this point. Even when Nintendo breaks that pattern, like last year with a Partner Showcase, there is usually a reason.

Last year was a transition period because of the Switch 2, and Nintendo did not have much to announce. This year is different. Now there is a new console on the market, the Switch 2, and Nintendo needs to start filling its calendar with major games.

The timing also lines up with important anniversaries. When Nintendo celebrated Super Mario’s 40th anniversary, they made sure to highlight it during the same week. Now, The Legend of Zelda is hitting its own 40th anniversary in the third week of February.

That week also happens to be the only open slot on Nintendo’s schedule.

The first week already had a Partner Showcase. The second week is busy with Mario Tennis Fever. The fourth week is rumored to have a Pokémon Presents. That leaves the third week wide open, making it the perfect window for a full Direct.

Some leakers, including names that are not always considered reliable, are claiming that this Direct would feature the next big 3D Mario game. It has been nearly a decade since Super Mario Odyssey, so the idea of a new mainline Mario is enough to get anyone’s attention. If Nintendo really is ready to show something big, this would be the moment to do it.

When you look at Nintendo’s current lineup, the need for a Direct becomes even clearer. Right now, only a few games have confirmed release dates. Mario Tennis Fever is coming out soon. Pokémon Popia is on the way. Super Mario Wonder is getting DLC. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream also has a date. After that, things are kind of bleak.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is set for spring, but there is still no exact date. That is important because the Mario movie is also launching in April. If you have watched the trailers, you know Yoshi plays a big role. It would make sense for Nintendo to use that movie hype to promote the game.

A Direct would be the perfect place to do that.

Then there is Fire Emblem: Fortune Weave, which is arguably the biggest title on the list. It still does not have a release date. Rhythm Haven Groove and Splatoon Raiders are also waiting in the wings, with little concrete information.

Nintendo has a habit of revealing Fire Emblem details in Directs, especially because of the special editions that come with books, amiibo, and collectibles. They rarely announce those games quietly.

All of this adds up to one thing. Nintendo needs a stage to lay out its plans. Right now, there is no clear "big" game carrying the year. A Direct would let them fix that by announcing dates, showing gameplay, and building excitement.

Of course, rumors can be unreliable.

They give you something to hope for, and then they can leave you disappointed. That is why it is important to manage your expectations. Some leakers, like Nate the Hate, have a strong track record, which makes this rumor feel more believable. However, until Nintendo makes an official announcement, nothing is definitive.

If you are a Nintendo fan, you probably feel the same mix of excitement and caution. You want to see big first-party games. You want to know what the Switch 2 is really capable of. You want surprises, announcements, and maybe even something like a new Luigi’s Mansion. It feels like Nintendo is holding back, and you are waiting for them to finally open the doors.
