Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain isn’t only a fantastic game to play, it’s helping make the world a better place. Konami just announced that they’ve started working with prosthetics artist, Sophie De Oliveira Barata, and a team of engineers, roboticists and product designers to create a highly stylized and multi-functional limb for a James Young. The 25 year-old lost his arm and leg when he was dragged onto the tracks, between two carriages of the London DLR as it was pulling in.

Sophie selected James Young, an avid gamer and huge fan of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, because of his confront of having an arm designed from a video game character. Sophie De Oliveira Barata started her career making hyper-realistic prosthetic limbs for amputees but realized that a higher demand existed for designs that reflected the person’s personality. This lead to the creation of the Alternative Limb Project, a organization that provides participants with prosthetics with elaborate designs. Some of her work includes the cyborg-inspired arm from SteamPunk and the crystal leg used by performer Viktoria Modesta during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics.

Konami started the project to highlight Sophie’s amazing work and worked closely to create a limb suited to James’ “taste and need”.

Konami stated that the “production and development of James’ limb is being tracked in a personal documentary. It’ll follow the creation and production of the limb, showcasing both Sophie and James’ working on the project. Call the ‘Alternative Limb Project’ the blog will go live today and follow the completion and successful use of the limb in January. Konami has created a dedicated blog to track the progress.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain released on September 1 on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC with critically acclaim. Check out our review here.
