In 2023, Lies of P made waves for its dark take on Pinocchio mixed with the punishing beauty of a souls-like game. Now, with Lies of P: Overture, developer NEOWIZ is ready to add to its twisted fairy tale.
This prequel expansion, which is set to come out this June 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, looks like it will be more than just a story drop. Lies of P: Overture will be a full creative swing that adds to both the gameplay and the story in the creepy city of Krat.
At the heart of Overture is a version of P, the mechanical main character of the game, who seems to have been sent back in time to the days before the puppet apocalypse. The expansion starts in a snowy mountainous area outside of the Krat Zoo. It adds a new status effect called "freeze" that can immobilize you if stacked, which is a good way to describe how cold and cruel your new enemies are.
After that, the journey goes into the zoo, where players will face horrifying enemies that are similar to the ones in Parasite Eve. Some enemies even change into scarier versions in the middle of a fight, which makes it harder to plan your moves.
A bow was shown as the game's first long-range weapon during the preview, which was one of the most exciting parts. As long as you have unlimited ammo and can switch between light and heavy attacks, it feels smooth and satisfying, at least when fighting small enemies. It's not useful in high-stakes boss fights because it takes a long time to charge and loses its sharpness quickly, but it does add some variety to the way you fight.
When we talk about bosses, Lies of P: Overture adds two new game modes that focus on them. The first is Battle Memories, a feature that lets players fight any major boss from the base game or the new DLC five times, with each time making the fight harder. At first, only the first three tiers are available. After clearing the third tier, tiers 4 and 5 become available. You don't get anything for winning, but this system is great for people who want to test their skills or go over important fights again.
Death March is the second new mode, and it works like a custom boss rush. You can place three or more boss fights right after each other on a playlist. Once unlocked, you can choose from all enemies. Just like in Battle Memories, there are different levels of difficulty, and you can access both modes from the Hotel Stargazer after you finish the main game.
Along with the DLC, a big patch is also being released that will make the game easier to get into. The first level of difficulty is now called Legendary Stalker, and two new, easier levels have been added: Awakened Puppet and Butterfly's Guidance. This thoughtful addition means that players who care more about the story than intense combat can now enjoy the story in the way that works best for them.
The preview made it clear that Lies of P: Overture is more than just an add-on; it's NEOWIZ's most creative work to date. With its creepy environments, mutated animal enemies, new combat tools, and easier access, Lies of P: Overture looks like it will add to the original game's dark world and make it more fun for more people. Because it adds both story-driven improvements and tough new combat challenges, this expansion could be a big turning point for the Lies of P community.
Lies of P: Overture looks to be the fantastic expansion fans had hoped for. Perhaps after the release of Overture this summer, NEOWIZ can finally start working on the Lies of P sequel featuring Dorothy, which they teased at the end of the first game. Who knows, they might already be working on the Dorothy game and will reveal it during the Summer Game Fest 2025.
