Microsoft bans over 1 million Xbox Live users

Information Week has claimed in their magazine that Microsoft has performed a ‘purging’ within Xbox Live. They have also stated that Microsoft has suspended over 1 million users for using modded Xbox 360 consoles just to play pirated games. Xbox Live currently has an install base of about 20 million users, and if this is indeed legitimate, their user count would drop by approximately 5 percent.
Recently, Microsoft has stated in an Information Week interview that all consumers “should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty, and result in a ban from Xbox Live."
After that incident CNET has noticed a side-effect of the numerous suspensions. In Craigslist, there are currently 80-plus modded and banned Xbox 360 consoles posted in the site, within the San Francisco region alone. This move has originated upon Modern Warfare 2’s release, which last week, police have reported that several users acquired a “burnt” copy of the game.
