Nintendo 3DS Launch Dates, Price Details
News by David on Jan 19, 2011
Nintendo’s latest handheld, the 3DS will launch in Europe on March 25, 2011 and in North America on March 27, 2011, retailing for $249.99 (or €249.99 if you prefer). The publisher made the announcement at a New York press conference earlier this morning. In addition to what we already know, the Nintendo 3DS will debut in two colors: Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue, as well as featuring an Internet browser and built-in software.

Too keep you up to speed, the Nintendo 3DS has all the standard handheld DS controls as you might already expect. Of course it comes with two screens, the plus directional pad on the left, as well as the standard Y X A B buttons on the right. New additions include a 3D slider to adjust 3D effects, an analog stick, and built-in motion and gyro sensors to detect movement and tilt. It’s unfortunate though, that the battery life only lasts 3-5 hours, especially with the 3D effect turned on.
And here are some more details on everything the 3DS has to offer:
+ Built-In Software: includes a built-in pedometer that will track your physical movement and record it in the system; Mii Maker which enables players to create custom Miis (being able to take pictures of yourself and implement it in the avatar); a shooting gallery called Face Makers; other features include a software for sound manipulation, ability to take 3D pictures, a video player, and an Internet browser.
+ Friends Code System: Games that had multiplayer often had you inserting multiple codes from other games. This system will basically eliminate software dependency, so you just have to enter your friends’ friend codes and you’ll be able to interact with them online in pretty much every game.
+ Backwards Compatibility: I’m sure many of you already know this. Basically, you’ll be able to play DS cartridge games as well as DSi (and DSi XL) downloadable titles with the 3DS.
+ Nintendo E-Shop: in which Kotaku has stated will “include a steady progression of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games" as well as new titles. Game demos and videos will also be available at this online store.
+ Of course, the Launch Titles: Nintendo states they plan to release more than 30 games between the launch date and by June, before E3 2011 comes around. Those games include Nintendogs + Cats, Pilotwings Resort, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Star Fox 64 3D, and more. Lots lots more. VG247 has the full list, if you want to check it out.
What Nintendo has shown seems like a cool piece of 3D technology, without those needless, oversized glasses. So now that a release date, new features, and price have been announced, are you convinced to a day 1 purchase? Wait for a price drop? Thinking about getting it later or never?
