June has arrived, and for Nintendo fans that usually means one thing: Nintendo Direct season. The month has become one of the biggest periods on the gaming calendar, bringing together major showcases from across the industry. Expectations tend to rise quickly whenever Nintendo enters the conversation.

Alongside Summer Game Fest, XBOX's annual showcase, and PlayStation’s latest State of Play, attention is now turning toward what Nintendo may have planned for the weeks ahead. With rumors continuing to circulate, many fans are expecting Nintendo to join the busy summer showcase season sooner rather than later.

Rumors surrounding the next Nintendo Direct have been circulating for months, with many reports pointing toward a presentation sometime in the middle of June. As those rumors continue to spread, some fans have started to feel that they already know most of Nintendo’s upcoming plans.

With industry reports and a constant stream of speculation, it feels like there are very few surprises left. However, recent conversations indicate Nintendo still has announcements to make publicly. That promise is helping to maintain the excitement as fans wait for the company’s next presentation.

The conversation gained momentum after a social media post highlighted an intriguing trend.

It’s a time of year that’s on the minds of many fans, as Nintendo has hosted a June Direct in four of the last five years. With June now underway, the annual countdown has effectively begun once again. Every passing day brings renewed speculation about when Nintendo might decide to make its move.

Not everyone enjoys the buildup, though. Some players continue to argue that leaks and rumors remove part of the excitement that comes with seeing a game officially revealed for the first time. Others have a different perspective and enjoy learning about projects in advance. The divide between those two groups has become increasingly common whenever major gaming presentations approach.

Despite the amount of information that has already surfaced, many still believe Nintendo has more to reveal. While several rumored projects have become widely discussed, there are still gaps in the company's upcoming lineup, helping to maintain excitement as June progresses.

Several projects have already generated significant attention this year. Star Fox has been a major topic of discussion, with reports and announcements about the franchise's return gaining momentum. Nintendo has also maintained excitement with projects like Pokémon Piccopia, Splatoon Raiders, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

Star Fox stands out because even people who expected the franchise to return did not know exactly what form that comeback would take. Once details began emerging, the conversation quickly shifted toward the game's presentation and overall direction. The relatively short gap between announcement and release also added to the excitement.

That way often produces a different kind of anticipation. Knowing that a game exists is one thing, but seeing it in action and knowing when it is coming can entirely change the reaction. Even when rumors pre-emptively hint at a project, the official reveal still counts. The final presentation, featuring Star Fox, sparked plenty of discussion among fans.

Nintendo already appears to have a solid lineup forming around the Switch 2.

Titles such as the rumored Ocarina of Time remake, Dusk Bloods, Fire Emblem Fortune Weave, Rhythm Heaven, Star Fox, and Splatoon Raiders continue to generate discussion. That lineup alone would give Nintendo a steady stream of releases. The bigger question is what else the company may be preparing.

Many fans have started discussing the possibility of an N64 revival due to the return of franchises like Star Fox and the ongoing reports surrounding Ocarina of Time. That naturally leads to speculation about other dormant series. Franchises such as Kid Icarus and Golden Sun remain popular topics whenever Nintendo begins revisiting older properties.

At the same time, some of Nintendo's biggest modern franchises have yet to appear on Switch 2. Mario Kart World is out already, but no new 3D Mario has been announced. Several of Nintendo's most proven system-selling franchises are still waiting for their Switch 2 debut.

The next mainline Splatoon game remains absent, while Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros., and an entirely new Zelda adventure have yet to be announced. Those are some of Nintendo's most important system sellers, and their eventual arrival will likely play a major role in the platform's future.

That reality is one reason many fans remain optimistic about Nintendo's long-term plans. The company still has several major franchises that are ready to be launched. Combined with the possibility of additional classic revivals, there is no shortage of potential announcements. The current lineup may only represent the beginning of what Nintendo intends to release over the coming years.

Another topic that’s getting some discussion is when the next Nintendo Direct will actually happen. There have been many rumors of dates in June, with talk of a presentation early in the month. But there has been little solid evidence for any specific date. As a result, many observers believe Nintendo may wait until later in the month before holding its next showcase.

Historically, Nintendo prefers to announce Direct presentations shortly before they air. Fans usually get little advance notice unless a major hardware reveal or another special occasion ties the event to it. Because of that approach, predicting an exact date remains difficult.

Many people expect the next presentation to be larger than a typical Partner Showcase. Nintendo already delivered a showcase focused on third-party content, and many people feel that a major first-party event is needed next. The company has a few upcoming releases that could use a little extra exposure.

Maintaining that momentum will be important for the rest of the year.

Already upcoming games such as Splatoon Raiders, Fire Emblem Fortune Weave, Dusk Bloods, Ocarina of Time Remake (rumored), and more are a good start. But Nintendo will likely want to make more announcements to maintain interest. Third-party support could also help bolster the platform’s release calendar.

Another title that pops up often in discussion is Pokémon Winds and Waves. The game is set to release in 2027 but another trailer wouldn’t be a surprise. More gameplay footage could help generate long-term hype, and give players a better idea of what to expect. Big Pokémon releases have always been a major factor in driving hardware sales.

With upcoming releases and Direct predictions, there is another reason why Nintendo continues to stand out in the gaming industry, of course. One recent social media post pointed out how many of the company’s biggest franchises have been around for decades. We compared the original Super Smash Bros. roster from 1999 with the current lineup of big Switch 2 releases from Nintendo.

It’s been nearly three decades since characters like Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu all became some of Nintendo’s most recognizable faces. Those same characters are still the face of franchises that sell millions of copies today. Nintendo has kept those brands relevant through multiple generations, but still finds new audiences for them.

That kind of consistency helps clarify why Nintendo stands out in the gaming industry. Sony has built its reputation on powerful hardware and cinematic experiences, whereas Microsoft has diversified with platform flexibility and a growing collection of major intellectual properties.

Heading into June, the focus will continue to be on Nintendo’s next presentation and what surprises may still be in store. The company already has a solid lineup on the horizon, but many fans feel there’s more to come. Whether those predictions are accurate is still uncertain, but Nintendo's plans continue to build anticipation.
