Rumor: MiHoyo Allows Genshin Impact Free Account Hacking
Reports are circulating that paid transactions trump account theft.

Posts online are claiming that MiHoyo is allowing hackers to steal free-to-play Genshin Impact accounts if the perpetrator was the first to make an in-game purchase. In one video with MiHoyo’s customer service, the rep claims that credit card transactions are stronger proof of account ownership than any other past evidence. Though, the company may also be trying to protect themselves from steep bank charge backs. During account setup, Genshin Impact passwords are only sent in the initial e-mail. At no other point is there any other form of stronger security, like two way authentication. If someone else manages to steal or learn of someone’s password, the account is as good as theirs. The developer’s main suggestion is to simply have a very strong password and security questions in the first place.

The player community is also skeptical about the video claims. In the past, similar reports appeared online, only for it to come to light that the proof was doctored with PhotoShop and other editing software. Those who play on console over mobile or PC do have an added layer of security, as the Genshin Impact account is linked to the system account like PlayStation Network. At times this has actually been criticized, as it also prevents those players from having a second account or restarting their adventure.
