Sony Finally Fixing the PS3 Compatibility Issue
PS3 emulation reportedly works on PS5—but Sony might be saving it to help sell the PlayStation 6.

PlayStation 5 users can finally take a deep breath. After months of online anger and arguments, Sony has quietly addressed one of the most annoying technical issues with the PS5: its support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) wasn't always functioning properly.
With the most recent system update, the VRR feature has been fixed on both the PS5 and the more powerful PS5 Pro. This has significantly improved the lives of millions of users worldwide. It appears that the problem with backward compatibility will be resolved soon.

There is a chance that Sony is almost done with one of its longest-running mysteries: PlayStation 3 emulation. However, new leaks and rumors in the industry suggest that the company may be saving this long-awaited feature for the PlayStation 6.
Fans have been asking for years for a way to play PS3 games on newer devices. Because the PS3 has a unique Cell processor architecture, it has been notoriously hard to emulate. Xbox has nailed backwards compatibility across generations, but Sony has been much slower to respond. For example, PS3 games can only be streamed through PS Plus Premium, but they don't have native support.
This might change soon, though.
A tech leaker claims that PS3 emulation technically works on PS5, but it needs to be refined to function better and be more compatible. Jeff Grubb, an industry reporter, previously stated that Sony was planning to showcase PS3 emulation in early 2024, but the event was pushed back.
So, why hasn't Sony released it yet?
Some people think that Sony was waiting for its PS4 users to stop using it before adding such a popular feature to the PS5. This is because PlayStation Plus Premium members who were still using old hardware might have been upset about the change. That wall may be gone now, though.
Sony says that 64% of its active users are on PS5. This number is sure to go through the roof when GTA 6 comes out in 2026. If Sony ends support for PS4 around the same time, this might be the best time to release emulated PS3 games.
However, there is still a chance that Sony is keeping PS3 emulation for the PlayStation 6, so they can use it as a major selling point. Moore's Law is Dead thought this might be the plan, which would give Sony a nostalgic secret weapon for its next-gen console.

That might be dangerous, though. If you held PS3 emulation hostage to boost sales of the PS6, fans who have been waiting for over a decade would probably get angry. Plus, it goes against Sony's current plan for cross-gen. You can play PS1, PS2, and PSP games on both the PS4 and the PS5.
It only makes sense to add PS3 support to both the PS5 and the PS6. Since the PlayStation 6 isn't expected to be released until 2027 or later, and PS4 support is likely to end in 2026, PS3 games may finally return to consoles in a meaningful way.
Until then, Sony's lack of response to the problem is still annoying. People are willing to pay. It's said that the tech is almost ready. Now the only question is whether Sony will do the right thing and bring PS3 games back to PS5, or they will hide it behind a new console.
