In an official press release, Ubisoft announced that a third installment in the Call of Juarez series is scheduled for release in the summer of 2011. The game, titled 'Call of Juarez: The Cartel', will exchange the Wild West theme of its predecessors for a modern setting that will take players to both Los Angeles and the city of Juarez (Mexico).

Apart from "bringing the best elements of the Wild West to a new and modern setting", Ubisoft promises that the game will offer an "immersive and mature story" up to par with its predecessors. The plot is also labeled as "gritty and relevant".

The two promotional screenshots released so far reveal that Ray, one of the main characters in both previous Call of Juarez games, will be returning. More details concerning the story or the gameplay have not yet been released.

The previous two games in the series, Call of Juarez (2007) and Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (2009), offered arcade-styled campaigns in the spirit of Call of Duty, while experimenting with sandbox elements and focusing heavily on the story aspect. Both titles were met with relatively positive reviews by the critics, registering aggregate scores of respectively 72 and 78 on Metacritic (PC versions).

Call of Juarez: The Cartel is being developed by Techland and will be available this summer on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
