Ubisoft To Open New Studio
News by Craig Bryan on Jul 09, 2009
With gaming companies shutting down and being bought out, and jobs being cut left, right and centre; Ubisoft have surprised us with the announcement of a brand new game studio in Toronto, Canada.
It will create around 800 new jobs over the next decade, and will take close to three quarters of a billion Canadian Dollars to fund. Ubisoft will be investing around 500 million, while the Ontario government will invest around 263 million to make up the numbers.
Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, explains the government’s involvement in the whole affair, “To build a high wage and a high standard of living you need talent. By investing in Ubisoft, we're building Ontario's economy now and for the future."
Ubisoft Toronto will be run by Yannis Mallat, who recently served as the CEO of Ubisoft’s largest studio in Montreal. That makes him part responsible for producing hit games such as Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia, both of which received critical acclaim.
This move is sure to boost Canada’s position of being the third largest maker of video games in the world, after overtaking the UK a few months back. They sit only behind the US and Japan now, and will surely have their sights firmly set upon catching up.
The studio will be expected to open later this year, though what franchises and games they are capable of producing is yet to be seen.
