Cyberpunk 2077 will not get the multiplayer mode that was once teased as priorities have shifted at CD Projekt RED.

Cyberpunk 2077’s potential multiplayer mode is something that has been discussed ever since the game first appeared, but it has now been confirmed that CD Projekt RED shelved the whole idea because of the difficult launch that the game had back in 2020. Things have improved with the game since then, but the company’s priorities have also shifted in the meantime.

Speaking to Eurogamer, the senior quest designer and coordinator on Cyberpunk 2077, Philipp Weber, explained that there was a switch in priorities, so some potential projects needed to go away. When it came to Cyberpunk 2077, the main concern was to ensure that the game became a far more playable experience rather than having a focus on a multiplayer mode or standalone multiplayer game.

This news comes shortly after the news that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a Game of the Year Edition in 2023, after the Phantom Liberty expansion has been released. With the creation of the Game of the Year Edition, there should be an end to any additional development on Cyberpunk 2077. This means that people probably shouldn’t have any hope that the company will change its stance on this. If you really wanted that multiplayer mode, you may need to work for the next CD Projekt RED game as the company does appear to want to venture into multiplayer in future.

Cyberpunk 2077 has somewhat fallen to the wayside as CD Projekt RED switches its focus to its The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Next-Gen Update, The Witcher Remake, and the new Witcher trilogy plans for the coming months and years. After the tumultuous launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED likely wants to focus on something that has always brought them near unconditional praise: The Witcher games. Hopefully the next one they release manages to release in a far more playable state than Cyberpunk 2077 when it released.
