Xbox Cloud Gaming Now Supports 1440p Streaming for Improved Visual Fidelity

Xbox Cloud Gaming updates introduce higher-quality resolutions, delivering sharper visuals and reduced macroblocking for games.

Recent reports have emerged indicating that Microsoft's Xbox Cloud gaming service, xCloud, may be adding higher-quality streaming options. A screenshot showing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora being streamed over xCloud at 1440p resolution caught attention.

The improvement is noteworthy because, historically, the image quality of Xbox cloud streaming has not been particularly impressive. Feedback previously provided to Microsoft suggested that while the service isn't designed to be the ultimate streaming solution, it aims to reach as many internet connections as possible. Despite understanding that objective, the image quality clearly could be better.

When playing games like Starfield and Forza Horizon 5 on xCloud, the first noticeable issue was the proliferation of macroblocks, which significantly reduced visual fidelity. For anyone considering streaming games, particularly on a TV, this has historically been a limiting factor.

However, reports of higher quality 720p and 1080p modes, as well as 1440p streaming, signal a notable improvement. It is important to note that xCloud servers stream Xbox Series S code rather than Series X, essentially virtualizing Series X silicon into Series S instances.

Testing 1440p Streaming on Avatar Frontiers of Pandora

Curious to see if the new, higher-quality mode could be experienced firsthand, testing was conducted on Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. Microsoft's monitoring system made it possible to transmit 1440p video. Video encoders have a hard time with this game since it has a lot of detail and complicated volumetric effects.

Even yet, the quality of the streaming was still quite good, showing a huge increase over how xCloud worked before. Latency, which has always been a strong point of the service, did not appear to be negatively affected.

Cloud Gaming on Mobile Devices

A common question arises regarding the viability of cloud gaming on mobile devices. While 1440p streaming is achievable on a desktop or console, deployment to mobile devices may be limited, as higher resolutions may be unnecessary for smaller screens. Certain apps, however, can communicate directly with xCloud servers to enforce higher bitrates and resolutions.

Ultimately, the viability of mobile streaming depends less on the streaming quality itself and more on the Game Pass library or the individual games you wish to access. xCloud is also expanding to allow streaming of games you own outside of Game Pass, offering additional flexibility.

It is worth noting that the games being streamed are still running in their Series S versions. While games like Avatar can achieve 60fps on Series X, streaming from Series S limits the performance and graphical fidelity relative to next-gen consoles or high-end PCs.

Some of these restrictions might be lifted in the future thanks to Microsoft's alleged commitment to next-generation streaming technologies.

Limitations on Streaming on Mobile Internet

Mobile internet remains a constraint despite these advancements. Network stability can vary greatly, even with fast 5G connections. Situations like being in an airport, on a train, or in areas with building interference can cause intermittent latency and connection drops.

For streaming to be effective on mobile devices, a stable and high-speed connection is crucial. Consequently, mobile cloud gaming may be best suited for home use with reliable Wi-Fi, although this compromises portability.

Small Screen Advantages and Alternatives

Interestingly, smaller screens do not require extremely high resolutions to deliver a satisfying experience. Even 720p can appear sharp and clear, provided the video encoding eliminates macroblocks.

This makes portable cloud gaming more feasible than expected. In-home streaming systems are also great options for home-based installations for individuals looking for dependable and seamless performance.

Growing xCloud Momentum

According to developer feedback, more and more gamers are streaming games straight from the cloud, indicating that xCloud usage is rising. Microsoft's use of Series S instances for virtualization suggests demand is expanding.

While the full potential of next-generation streaming has yet to be realized, current improvements, such as 1440p streaming, demonstrate that the service is becoming increasingly viable for high-quality experiences.

Testing Avatar Frontiers of Pandora on xCloud at 1440p highlights the service's new capabilities. Using Nvidia Share at maximum settings captured the 25 megabit stream at 130 megabits, clearly showing the quality improvement.

The visual fidelity represents a significant step forward, indicating that cloud gaming has begun to overcome its previous limitations while maintaining low latency and delivering accessible performance.
