Blackout! 2: Review

Music by King on  May 23, 2009

The first half of 2009 for Hip-Hop has been quite a let down. There have been very few releases that are really worth listening to again and again. And you know it's a bad year when Rick Ross's album is a legit contender for having a top 5 album so far.

Alongside Eminem's Relapse, the sequel to one of Hip-Hop's meanest duo's highly acclaimed album was looked at as one of the first half's most anticipated releases.

Blackout! 2 really doesn't bring anything new to Meth and Red's gritty formula, but it does deliver nontheless. The album sounds somewhat similar to the original Blackout! with virtually the same lyrical concepts of humour and weed, and it still has strong beats.

I'll start off by saying, there is no Rockwilder on this album, but there are still plenty of great tracks. The album is heavy on guest appearances, many coming from Meth's Wu Tang Clan and Red's Def Squad, with the likes of Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Keith Murray, Erick Sermon, also Bun B from UGK to name a few.

The production is solid, featuring beats from Pete Rock, Erick Sermon, Rockwilder, Buckwild, among others. They all provide dark beats with a hard bump, perfect for Meth and Red's vicious flow over top of them.

Any fan of Method Man & Redman's previous work, or solo projects will most likely find Blackout! 2 to be a highly enjoyable album, featuring the same thing that you're used to from them, and while it may be old, it still works and sounds as nice as ever. The only real disappointment I have is that the album can get bland in certain points, because it doesn't really peak at any certain point. It's impressive that they're still just as good lyrically as they were ten years ago.
