The following guide highlights the most valuable upgrades and unlocks available early in Death Stranding 2. Each section presents one of the best tools, equipment pieces, or facilities to pursue, along with instructions on how to obtain them.
This guide is structured to provide clear subheadings for each upgrade, with all names of items, NPCs, and facilities properly capitalized and bolded. All video references have been removed to focus solely on actionable in‑game information.
Best Basic Boots

The first essential upgrade is the Trekking Boots, unlocked by connecting to the Bokka facility in central Mexico. Deliver lost cargo found around the facility to raise its connection level.
Once connected, the Trekking Boots offer improved durability and higher impact resistance compared to the initial transporter boots, reducing cargo damage from falls.
Further leveling of the Bokka connection unlocks porter tools such as the Sticky Gun, which pulls distant cargo toward you—particularly useful in mountainous regions.
Otter Hood
The Otter Hood grants the ability to swim across rivers without damaging cargo. To obtain it, locate the side facility known as the Inventor on an island in the Australian Outback’s tar‑covered areas.
Use the scanner to identify shallower yellow‑pip tar paths, walk through them, and deliver lost cargo to connect. Once the Inventor connection is established, the Otter Hood becomes available.
Pekora Hat
The Pekora Hat reduces stamina depletion during strenuous activities such as climbing, traversing water, or engaging in combat.

To unlock this hat, reach the second connection star at the Data Scientist facility, encountered during the main story. Deliver both lost cargo and complete standard orders for this facility to earn the Pekora Hat and gain a notable stamina conservation bonus.
Boost Skeleton
The Boost Skeleton significantly increases movement speed and jump distance and does not occupy hip slots, preserving cargo capacity.
The Dowser provides the level one variant during the main narrative, but the level three variant—offering maximum efficiency and battery life—unlocks at four connection stars.
Prioritize raising the Dowser connection level to acquire and equip the level three Boost Skeleton for the remainder of the journey.
Insane Melee Buffs (Pizza Chef Secret)
A hidden feature of the Pizza Chef facility grants powerful melee combat skills. Deliver the lost cargo known as the Pizza Chef’s Misanga—found in nearby Mule camps—to unlock a secret cutscene and progress through connection levels.
This rewards three unique attacks: Pizza Whirlwind Kick (hold L2, then circle), Spinning Pizza Strike, and the level four Great Pizza Spinning Slam (hold L2, R2, then circle). These abilities greatly enhance melee combat variety.

Auto Rez Device
For those tackling brutal difficulty or challenging encounters, the Auto Rez Device provides automatic revival upon being downed, preventing a voidout. This gadget attaches to the backpack and operates on a cooldown timer.
It unlocks at connection level four with the Motherhood facility, accessible during the main story. The Auto Rez Device activates immediately upon unlocking and is invaluable in brutal battles.
Deployable Camel and Shield
The Pioneer facility in the desert offers two notable upgrades: the Deployable Shield and the Camel Hood. The Deployable Shield functions as a portable cover for combat, either carried or planted in the ground.
The Camel Hood restores stamina when exposed to Timefall or immersed in water. To connect, deliver lost cargo across the desert, and complete standard orders for the Pioneer facility.
Never Fall Over Again (Stabiliser)
The Stabiliser battery, unlocked at the Eastern Environmental Observatory atop the snow‑capped mountain, prevents stumbling animations when overloaded. The level two variant, obtained at two connection stars, occupies half the backpack space while still providing battery power.
Swap out existing batteries for the Stabiliser to maintain balance and uninterrupted movement across rugged terrain.

Floating Sentry Gun
Combat enthusiasts can deploy the Floating Sentry Gun to distract and damage enemies. This autonomous turret floats and targets foes, making it ideal for boss fights and general encounters.
To unlock, complete the suborder at the Eastern Environmental Observatory that delivers parts to the Aeronautical Engineer facility. Once connected, the Floating Sentry Gun becomes available for deployment.
Weapon Upgrades
Various side facilities grant unique weapons and grenades. For example, the Lone Commander facility offers sniper upgrades, while the Former Geophysics Research Lab in Mexico provides assault rifle enhancements and additional Tri‑Cruiser armor.
Identify facilities that match preferred combat styles, connect by delivering cargo or completing orders, and unlock progressively upgraded weapon variants.
Returning to Mexico

Remember to revisit Mexico via any Plate Gate when not engaged in a main order. Facilities there—including the Bokka, Artist, and Former Geophysics Research Lab—offer valuable gear like the Trekking Boots, vehicle color customizations, and advanced armor.
Bringing a portable base or Tri‑Cruiser can expedite facility access and connection leveling.
